With an incredible sense of smell, pigs use their noses to explore the world around them. In this case, that world happened to include a camera.

Visayan warty pigs are critically endangered, and ambassador animals like Ernie help guests connect with and learn about this remarkable species.

🌎🦦 Happy World Otter Day from Max and Mimi!

Our North American river otters spend their days swimming, trotting, and causing a little chaos at the Zoo, but their species also has a strong connection to our region.

River otters were once found throughout Pennsylvania’s waterways, including the Erie area. By the early 1900s, pollution, habitat loss, and trapping caused them to disappear from much of the state.

These skilled swimmers can hold their breath for up to 8 minutes, use sensitive whiskers to detect underwater movement, and are specially adapted to life in rivers, streams, and wetlands 💦

Today, thanks to improved water quality and conservation efforts, otters are making a comeback and have even been spotted at Presque Isle State Park in recent years!
