Radioactive Garbage?!

Notice Regarding Trace Radioactive Material Detected in Municipal Waste

The Borough was notified that a municipal garbage truck triggered a radiation sensor at the disposal facility. The material detected was at a trace level and does not present a danger to residents, collection staff, or the public. Public safety has not been compromised.

Pro Waste accepted the load and is handling it in accordance with its standard safety procedures. While this incident poses no health concern, materials containing radioactive traces must be managed separately from regular household waste to prevent future disposal disruptions.

In this instance, the source was identified as a bundle of five used Zepbound weight-loss medication cartridges.

In other cases, people who have received certain medical treatments may produce waste with temporary trace levels of radiation. This can include items such as tissues, wipes, and adult incontinence products. Healthcare providers can advise patients and caregivers on any special handling or disposal instructions related to a particular treatment.

Based on the location of the material within the truck, the collection is believed to have occurred on Monday’s route in the College Heights area, generally between 29th and 33rd Streets.

If you or someone in your household has received medical treatment involving radioactive materials, please do not place potentially affected waste in regular weekly trash collection. For medical devices containing needles, please use an approved disposal method, such as the medication disposal box at Borough Hall. Contact your medical provider for guidance on the appropriate disposal method.
