Today is Meteorologist Kelly Roland last day at Erie News Now, and while I’m excited for her next chapter, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to miss having her around.
When I first called Kelly to welcome her to the team, I remember thinking, “Wow, she really doesn’t sound very excited about this.” 😂 Looking back, I’m pretty sure it was a combination of being anxious, nervous, excited, and probably wondering what she had gotten herself into with her first job.
Then came her first day, and somehow, it was an instant friendship. Maybe it was because she was Gen Z and I was Gen X which, honestly, should have made communication impossible. 😂 But somehow, it worked. She “canceled” me over a comment I made that will remain strictly between Kelly and me. Since I figured I had already been canceled, I decided I might as well say whatever I wanted from that point on! And like a trooper, Kelly quickly figured out my humor, understood what we were trying to accomplish with Weather, and became a huge part of making it fun.
Kelly is incredibly bright and talented. In my experience in this business, she has everything it takes to go as far as she wants and I have no doubt she will.
Kelly also came into my life at a time when I really needed some laughter. After the loss I had experienced shortly before she arrived, there were days when I jokingly called her “Emily’s replacement.” But through all the videos we made, the ridiculous moments, and the countless laughs, Kelly became her own special part of my life.
Every single night we worked together included literal out-loud from the gut laughter, and somehow those long evenings always seemed to go by a little faster because of it.
I eventually left to take on new challenges, but Kelly has stayed in touch with me along the way. And thankfully, this isn’t goodbye. We’re going to keep making videos for as long as we possibly can. It may be through distance now, but we’ll figure it out and make it work.
Kelly, I wish you nothing but good luck, happiness, and tremendous success in whatever comes next. You’re extremely talented, and I know you’re going to do great things.
