Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Inc. (EHCA)

Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Inc. (EHCA) EHCA's mission is to assist people with all levels of disabilities to live rich & fulfilling lives. DISCOVER THE EHCA DIFFERENCE
What is the EHCA difference?

We believe it is our ongoing story of compassion-in-action. All services are personalized to meet the needs of the individual, and we specialize in providing care for those who are also considered medically fragile. Through a unique program aimed at reducing the incidence of developmental disabilities, EHCA also helps women with at-risk pregnancies deliver healthy babies and assists needy families

to create stable home environments. Each day, our goal is to contribute to the health, development, and fulfillment of every person placed in our care. Since its founding in 1912, the agency has grown to include 18 group homes for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. EHCA’s six community programs offer opportunities and support services for individuals with disabilities who reside with family members or on their own. Today, EHCA makes a difference in the lives of over 400 people and their families each day in Erie, Crawford, and Venango counties. Our facilities and services have changed through the years to meet evolving community needs, but our commitment to making a difference in the lives of the region’s most vulnerable residents has never wavered. OUR HISTORY
The story begins in Erie on September 26, 1912, when thirteen women gathered in the home of Mrs. Otto Hitchcock to discuss the pressing need to find a home for an infant found abandoned at Union Station. The women formed a board of directors, and over the next two weeks they rented a house at 947 West 7th Street and hired a nurse and house mother to staff the facility. Erie Infants Home and Hospital was born. The object of the new institution was to “provide a temporary home or hospital for needy infants from birth to two years of age.” Local residents donated money and furnishings. Demand for the home’s services quickly became evident: within its first year of operation, more than 80 babies received care. The organization was incorporated in 1913. The need for larger quarters prompted a move to West 11th Street the following year, and in 1916 the board of directors purchased a house on East 26th Street. During World War I, the small staff and board volunteers cared for many children there whose families were unable to provide for them. A new home/hospital was built on adjacent property in 1927. This building, located at 226 East 27th Street, remains the agency’s main facility. The East 26th Street house became a residence for nurses. During the Great Depression and again during World War II, Erie Infants Home and Hospital served as a refuge for countless children whose families struggled during difficult economic times. By the 1950s, board members saw the need to reevaluate the role of the organization. The home expanded its charter to care for mentally challenged children awaiting admission to Polk State School and Hospital. Erie Infants Home and Hospital began providing educational experiences for each resident in the early 1970s. The agency’s commitment to helping each person reach his/her highest potential was an emerging concept. In 1972, the agency changed its name to Erie Infants Home. In the 1980s, the purchase of two houses for providing residential care demonstrated the agency’s emerging vision of providing more home-like settings. By 1983, another name change was needed. Erie Infants and Youth Home more accurately described the residents the agency served. The infants were growing up. Rapid growth and change in the 1990s made it apparent that the agency had again outgrown its name. Erie Homes for Children and Adults (EHCA) better reflected the range of people served by the agency as well as the expanded services provided. The progressive spirit of EHCA’s founders continues into the new millennium. Today, the agency offers programs in four Pennsylvania counties and provides supports to over 350 individuals and their families through its 17 group residences and six community-based programs every day. EHCA employs nearly 500 people in positions ranging from direct support professionals and nurses to program specialists and family service providers. As a private nonprofit organization, EHCA depends not only on governmental funding and the commitment of its staff but also on community volunteers and the generous support of individual and corporate donors.

🎂 We celebrated two birthdays last week: Tami and Camiya! With so many people in all of our programs, we actually celebrate birthdays all the time. These two happened to be the same day, and they were full of such joy that we had to share.

Tami had a SpongeBob party, and her smile says more than any caption ever could. She was showered with gifts and had an amazing day. And this was Camiya's first birthday at EHCA as she just moved to her home last month. She rocked her cowgirl hat and had the best party. She loved her bubbles on the patio, gifts, and celebrating with her housemates. 🎁

ZotArtz Post #3: The Conclusion! When the fun painting ended, we had several very colorful sheets of amazing artwork to use in so many great ways. The Szots had prepared us for this and gave us great ideas. Our team was ready!

Once again, team members from Options, Life Sharing, Residential, and MOVE got to work. They traced various size picture frame templates onto the sheets and cut them out, all to be framed later. Other large rolls will be specially cut into greeting cards and little gift boxes! These pieces will be lovingly distributed among all of our homes, families, friends, supporters, and more.

Maybe one will come your way!

Zot Artz Round 2! Here's the last set of the creation of this extraordinary canvas. What sets this set apart from the 1st round of pictures? So much! Watch out for the gradual layering of new colors as Dwayne and Marianne's vision of sunrise to sunset takes shape.

This round also shows the beautiful chaos, hard work, fun, and dedication of the day. Our team works so hard to give our individuals the BEST each day, and it really shines in these photos. All programs and departments came together to make this event possible. These photos also show the fun we all had! Employees got in on the action, too, and added their own touch to the masterpiece.

The wide shots show the perspective of the whole room, while the close-up shots show the method to the madness with beautiful pops of flowers and details. See the picture with marker outlines of rectangles? Hints of one last round of pictures to come! 🎨

This will be the best 3.5 minutes of your day 🙂 (Sound ON for laughs and chaos!) We were incredibly fortunate to bring one of the best and most unique experiences possible to EHCA this week, Zot Artz

ZotArtz founder, Dwayne Szot grew up in a foster home with a foster brother and sister who had cerebral palsy. He credits that experience with giving him the motivation to create Zot Artz. As an artist and engineer, he designed and built machines that he used to apply color to huge surfaces. His pieces include adaptive rollers with fun designs, bubble machines, windmill-style pieces, and more. He and his wife Marianne travel the country bringing their program to places like EHCA, schools, and others. (Much of this taken from https://zotartz.com/)

As you'll see in this video, this was one of the most special and wonderful experiences we could've provided. It allowed the opportunity for everyone to create a beautiful masterpiece!

This video is just the beginning. We'll have LOTS of pictures and more videos to come! There was just so much to capture in one day.

It makes our hearts burst with pride to see Lou and Adam giving back. Hannah, who oversees their home, saw the call for help posted yesterday and she immediately stepped up. She knew the guys would love this. She has a heart for the Erie City Mission and has been instrumental in reconnecting another of our residents to serving there and that love of service is now spreading. Keep it up, Lou and Adam! 🩵🧡🩷💙
