Ephraim Police Department – Community Notice

Heads up, Ephraim —

New Utah laws regarding e-bikes and electric scooters are going into effect.

What you need to know right now:

As of Today (May 6th) Riders under 21 years old must wear a helmet when operating an e-bike or electric scooter.
A citation can be issued not only to the rider, but also to a parent or responsible adult who allows a minor to ride without a helmet.

This update is focused on safety. E-bikes and scooters are becoming more common around Ephraim, and many can reach speeds that increase the risk of serious injury. Wearing a helmet is one of the simplest ways to prevent that.

We encourage all parents and guardians to take a moment to talk with their kids and make sure they have a properly fitted helmet—and that they’re wearing it every time they ride.

*The required e-bike certificate is not yet available, and that portion of the law will not take effect until January 27, 2027.
At this time, Ephraim PD will be enforcing helmet requirements only.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe.

COMMUNITY SAFETY REMINDER

We’ve received several calls from concerned citizens asking that parents remind their children—especially those riding e-bikes and scooters—to look both ways before crossing the road.

There have been a few close calls where kids entered the roadway without checking for traffic. Thankfully no one has been hurt, but these situations can turn serious very quickly.

We urge everyone to stay alert:

👀 Riders: Always look both ways before crossing
🚶 Pedestrians: Stay aware and avoid distractions
🚗 Drivers: Slow down and watch for kids near roadways

Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe. A few extra seconds of awareness can prevent an accident.

Stay alert. Stay safe.

CASE UPDATE: Never underestimate the power of social media! Our Facebook and Instagram detectives came through in a big way, and the suspect has been identified. Thanks to your incredible attention to detail and quick shares, we’ve successfully identified the suspect.

🚨 Tattletale Tuesday 🚨

Well well well… looks like someone forgot the “pay before you leave” part of shopping at Ace Hardware.

This (slightly blurry) individual allegedly helped themselves to some merchandise without stopping at the register.

So once again, we’re calling on our elite Facebook & Instagram detectives 🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♂️ — zoom in, enhance, and do your thing!

If you recognize this person, give us a call at (435) 283-4602 or Sanpete County Dispatch at (435) 835-2345. Please reference Case #26040911 and Officer Powell with Ephraim PD.

Help us remind them that “Ace is the place”… where you still have to pay

We truly wish this was an April Fools’ joke…

Yesterday was a bittersweet day at Ephraim Police Department as we said goodbye to Sgt. Justin Aagard, who officially retired after 20 years of dedicated service.

Sgt. Aagard has been a true professional throughout his career—committed, dependable, and always willing to go the extra mile for the community he served. His dedication and positive impact have not gone unnoticed, and he has played an important role in making Ephraim a safer and better place.

While it’s hard to see him go, we are incredibly grateful for his years of service and couldn’t be happier for him as he begins this new chapter.

Thank you, Sgt. Aagard—you will be greatly missed! 💙

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

Ephraim PD is warning residents about a fraudulent notice circulating that claims to be a “Final Court-Ordered Mandatory Collection Notice” from the State of Utah.

⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT RESPOND.

This notice (pictured) is NOT from a legitimate government agency. It uses threats and urgency to pressure people into making payments.

🔍 Red flags to watch for:

• Threats of license suspension or legal penalties
• Claims of no appeal or “non-negotiable” enforcement
• QR code directing you to pay

🚫 Do NOT:
• Scan the QR code
• Click any links
• Send money or provide personal information

✅ Remember:
• Government agencies do NOT request payments via QR codes or unofficial links
• Official notices come through verified mail and proper legal channels
• When in doubt, contact the court or DMV directly using official contact information

📢 What to do:
• Ignore and discard the notice
• Report it to Ephraim Police Department
• Share this post to help protect others
