Twenty-five years ago, our homeland was attacked, but in the skies over Pennsylvania, the response began—a defense of freedom that galvanized our entire nation.

For the residents of Stonycreek Township in Somerset County, the events of September 11, 2001, remain eternally present. When Flight 93 went down in a local field a quarter-century ago, the tragedy intersected directly with the lives of the community's civic leaders. A current township supervisor was among the very first responders on the scene; a retired supervisor was working just minutes away, and the county's Emergency Management Agency director spent weeks managing the recovery effort.

Today, these local leaders share their harrowing memories of that fateful Tuesday and reflect on how Stonycreek, Somerset County, and the broader region continue to honor the 40 passengers and crew members whose courage saved countless lives in Washington, D.C.
