Asthma awareness starts with understanding. 😮‍💨

Good afternoon residents of Crawford County!

May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month!

Asthma affects millions of people, but with the right care and awareness, it can be managed effectively. Knowing your triggers, taking medications as prescribed, and having an Asthma Action Plan can help prevent serious attacks. Don’t ignore symptoms like wheezing, chest tightness, persistent cough, or shortness of breath. Common triggers include smoke, pollution, pollen, pet hair or dander, dust, mold, and chemical odors.
With that being said, it is important to monitor the air quality in our area. The Crawford County Health Department will be adopting the Air Quality Flag Program. Poor air quality can make asthma and allergy symptoms worse by irritating the lungs and airways. On days with high air pollution or pollen counts, people with asthma or allergies should limit outdoor activity, keep rescue inhalers nearby, and monitor for any symptoms of an attack.

Today’s air quality flag is GREEN! ✅ A perfect day to get outside and enjoy the fresh air! As a reminder, we do have some Neilmed products such as sinus rinse and sprays available here at the Health Department.

Summer is quickly approaching!
If you love the water and are interested in learning how to safely navigate our Indiana waterways, we have a great opportunity for you!

Crawford County Health Department and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are partnering to provide a FREE Boater Safety Course for Crawford County residents on June 6, 2026.

All participants who successfully complete the course will receive a FREE emergency kit that includes a life jacket, first aid kit and sunscreen.

There will be a limit of 20 spots available. Call 812-338-2302 x1 to reserve yours. To ensure you receive your incentives the day of completion, please reserve your spot at least two weeks before event.

If you have not gotten your dog or cat's rabies vaccine updated, June 6th is your opportunity.
The clinic will be set up at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.
This will be FREE to Crawford County Residents ONLY.
You MUST show proof of residency.
Out of county residents will have a charge of $15.
This clinic is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE from 10am to 12pm. While supplies last.
No appointments required.
Due to the limited number of shots available, a limit of 2 per household.

The Health Department had the opportunity to have a booth at this past weekend's Clean Sweep event hosted by Crawford County Solid Waste District. Their theme this year was fishing. Our contribution to go along with the theme was sunscreen.
