Mid 17th Cent. Dutch painting that came to the studio for cleaning and restoration. It had been heavily restored in Rome a few decades ago (double lined) and extensively repainted to disguise abundant abrasion to the paint layer, especially the foliage and the sky. What looked like a twilight scene in summertime is now clarified, and lots of details have re-emerged.

For difficult times like this miserable week in US politics, a little project like this 10 x 14 inch oil painting is a great antidote.... ☺️

It's been a while because of this hectic summer that has kept me running all over... Now it's time to catch up a bit to show you a charming piece of art that came with a visible coat of pipe smoke and ni****ne obscuring the colors underneath. The whole room smelled during cleaning!! Aaahhh, this would be the perfect little cabin to spend this Labor Day weekend at leisure.... 😍

Check this out... Remember the news posted in late 2022 about the damaged painting by Artemisia Gentileschi during the 2020 explosions in Beirut? Here is the end result after years of treatment at the Getty.

Another sarcophagus, this one from the Ptolomeic period. Curiously, the skin tone is much lighter than most other similar objects, perhaps a Roman influence. It came for restoration and without a doubt it now looks more wholesome than it did for hundreds and hundreds of years. It was incredibly dirty and had many, many surface gouges, abrassions and losses. Surely, if this were to be treated as an archeological artifact the approach to conserving it would have been different. But the object will go to a private collection to be enjoyed for its wonderful aesthetic qualities. (Left: photo from 1988; Right: photo from June, 2025)

Three for three. Done, mounted, delivered. And to think that a few months ago these three pieces were falling apart almost completely. Hundreds of hours of collaborative effort yielded excellent results.... Any comments?

The work on funerary objects continues.... This "box" was originally placed to shield the sarcophagus you've seen in previous posts. This is the proper left side of the box. One done, four more to go. The most interesting one is the top side, reserved for last.

Bottom part of the sarcophagus shown previously, first seen during treatment (the lateral band at the bottom had already been treated) and after treatment (or nearly).

Sometimes it's hard to know why duty calls a paintings conservator. Hey, private collectors know what they want to display in their chambers, right?
