🚨 SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT – ELEVATED WILDFIRE DANGER TODAY 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for much of Upper Michigan due to elevated wildfire potential through this evening.

🔥 Conditions contributing to increased fire danger include:
• Dry vegetation and lack of recent rainfall
• Warm temperatures
• South to southwest winds of 15–20 mph with higher gusts possible

⚠️ Please avoid all outdoor burning today. Even small fires can spread quickly under these conditions.

If you see smoke or a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 911.

Burn restrictions remain in effect. Before conducting any outdoor burning, check current restrictions and permit information through the Michigan DNR.

Stay alert and help protect our community and natural resources.

GTFD responded for Mutual Aid to Newton Township this afternoon for a brush fire that started from a tree on a power line. Garfield Brush arrived first on scene and was able to initiate fire attack while staying clear of the downed power line. Newton arrived shortly after and was able to assist containing the remain area of the fire.

A friendly reminder: although things have “greened up” outside, recently dry conditions have contributed to increased wildfire risk.

Annual hose and ladder testing was completed this morning. Thank you Assistant Chief Feneley and Captain Hopper for assisting. The Naubinway Marina is now open.
