Almost two years ago, I handed out blue buttons at the Maine Democratic Convention saying, “I am a Rural Democrat and I Vote.”

The point was to suggest that when it comes to economic issues, rural Democrats have more in common with rural Republicans than with urban Democrats and to urge Maine’s Democratic Leadership to pay more attention to the needs of rural Mainers as a whole.

In that 2024 convention, delegates elected attorney Charlie Dingman from the very rural town of Leeds to be the new Chair of the Maine Democratic Party. I was subsequently elected to the MDP Executive Committee.

This year, the MDP reduced the number of delegates to the upcoming Democratic Convention, a change I think will make it easier for rural Democrats to be more fully and fairly represented at this year’s convention.

Over the weekend when this year’s Mane Democratic caucuses were held, here in Lincoln the Lincoln Lakes Regional Democratic Committee was able to elect a full slate of delegates to this year’s convention, something that has been difficult to do in past years and has previously diluted the influence of rural Democrats at past conventions.

However, it is likely that some communities in Penobscot County will NOT have fielded a full slate of delegates, and if that happens, the Lincoln Lakes Region may be able to have a few more delegates appointed.

So - please – let me know if you are a registered Democrat who might be willing to fill in if more delegates are needed. We very much want to fill as many unfilled delegate positions with rural Mainers who can represent the needs of rural Mainers at this year’s convention (which will be held on May 1st and 2nd in the Portland area).

You can call me at (207) 693-8384 or email me at [email protected] if you would like to know more about the benefits and costs of being a delegate.

Also at Sunday’s LLRDC meeting, we accepted Passadumkeag and Winn as member towns of the LLRDC, joining Burlington, Enfield, Howland, Lakeville, Lee, and Lincoln - growing the official member towns of the LLRDC to eight.

We also elected new officers for the coming year, all 4 of them women. Denise Moore from Lee is the new Chair of the LLRDC, and Nancy Christensen of Lee is the new Secretary. Kat Jewell was re-elected Treasurer. Congratulations to all four of them. I believe the LLRDC is in good hands for the foreseeable future and continuing to grow.

If you would like to meet the LLRDC’s new leadership, please join us for our next monthly LLRDC meeting which will be held on Sunday, March 15th – time and location to be determined. Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected], and I will get back to you with those details as they become available.

Caucuses THIS Weekend!!!

Every 2 years, the Maine Democratic Party holds caucuses across the state. HERE in the Lincoln Lakes Region, those caucuses will be held THIS Sunday, March 1st – starting at 12:30pm – upstairs in the Northern Penobscot Region III Tech School here in Lincoln.

All registered Democrats from the following towns and townships are invited to attend and participate: Burlington,
Carroll Plantation,
Chester,
Drew Township,
Enfield,
Howland,
Kingman Township,
Lakeville,
Lee,
Lincoln,
Lowell,
Mattawamkeag/Molunkus Township,
Maxfield,
Passadumkeag,
Prentiss Township,
Sebeois Plantation,
Springfield,
Webster Plantation,
and Winn.

Six of those towns (Burlington, Enfield, Howland, Lakeville, Lee, and Lincoln) are already members of the Lincoln Lakes Regional Democratic Committee. Attendees from the other 15 towns will be given the choice of also joining the LLRDC or of reviving a municipal Democratic committee for their town or township.

Member towns and townships will then get to decide who will be the leaders (i.e., chair, vice-chair, treasurer, and secretary) of the LLRDC for the coming year.

After that, all attendees together will get to nominate and vote on delegates to the Maine Democratic Convention to be held in greater Portland area on May 1st and 2nd. The LLRDC gets to submit 7 delegates and 7 alternates to attend the state convention.

Each candidate to be a delegate (or alternate) will proclaim support for one of the 6 Democratic candidates for Maine’s next Governor and make a short speech before attendees vote.

If you would like to become a delegate, an alternate, or an LLRDC executive, you can submit your nomination during the meeting before the speeches and votes.

Attendees will also get to hear from and meet candidates for state legislature and state senate. And candidates for Governor, US Senate, and US House of Representatives who are still collecting signatures on petitions to qualify for the ballot may have representatives present to collect such signatures.

Finally, our featured speaker will be Roman Ismailov, a cultural exchange student from Ukraine who now lives and goes to school here in the Lincoln Lakes region. Refreshments will also be provided, including some Ukranian beverages and snacks in Roman’s honor.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday at 12:30pm at Northern Penobscot Tech at 35 West Broadway here in Lincoln.

Standing up for Ukraine 🇺🇦

Demonstrators turned out last night in front of the gazebo in Lincoln for a candlelight vigil to mark the 4th anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

4 Years of War

Winter froze the ground. The power grid destroyed. The glow of high-tech public squares in complete darkness. Several of the continent's most advanced cities taken off the grid, leaving a population without any electricity, water, or heat. The largest of them – Kyiv, with its 3 million population, does not receive electricity for days.

I was there. Now I am here. I am a teenager, a cultural exchange student from Ukraine who now lives and goes to school here in the Lincoln Lakes region while my family and neighbors continue the struggle back home.

Four years ago, 02/24/2022, Russia started its full-scale invasion. For all the Ukrainians around the world, this day will never be forgotten. These 4 years are full of struggle, as well as hope, power and faith. All the pain leads our people to move forward through anything.

We didn’t wait for rescue. We put tents right in our apartments, cooked the food on candles and camping stoves, and warmed our kids with hot water in plastic bottles. We slept in jackets and made improvised clothes for our animals. Right now, that is still the life of the common civilian in Ukraine. At the same time, with daily shelling and waiting for their beloved from the frontline, people are becoming victims of the harsh winter, weaponized by Russia.

All the kids like me who are volunteering and fundraising all their summers, all the refugee Ukrainians rallying for their beloved homeland, all the civilians at home rescuing people from the rubble after another shelling – all of them are dreaming about the day when the fire of war will subside, when the colors of our flag will fly in all our cities, when we will be independent without the daily need to survive. At the same time, we remember all those people who are no longer with us, who will live just in our memories. They were also waiting for this day.

This is the story of my people: free people of Ukraine, who don’t want an empire to come to their land once again. Free people who are fighting for their future in a world of peace, order, law, and democracy.

If you would like to meet Roman, this week’s guest columnist, he will be our featured speaker at the Lincoln Lakes Democratic Caucus on March 1st at 12:30pm at Northern Penobscot Tech Region III here in Lincoln.

Go to our website at llrdc.org for a list of the 21 towns the LLRDC is hosting. All Democrats from those 21 towns are invited and encouraged to attend and to participate in a small but important part of the American democracy.

There will also be a candlelight vigil at 5:30pm on Tuesday, February 24th in front of the gazebo in Lincoln in honor of Ukrainians on the 4th anniversary of the invasion.

How would you prove you were an American citizen if an ICE agent stopped you and demanded you do so?

Maine remains the whitest state in the nation so it is unlikely many of us will ever face such a situation, but for a moment – how would you do it? How would you prove to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent that you were an American citizen?

Your driver’s license doesn’t prove anything, says nothing about your nationality - not even Real ID driver’s licenses. Do you have a passport? Do you carry it with you? What about your birth certificate?

Last October, ProPublica reported at least 170 American citizens had been detained by ICE in the previous 6 months, more than 50 of them after agents questioned their citizenship – almost all of those Latinos – almost 20 of them children. Does your child carry a passport or birth certificate to prove American citizenship?

That Pro-Publica article also reported it is not just being detained: “Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents. They’ve had their necks kneeled on. They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear. At least three citizens were pregnant when agents detained them.” And that was just a 6-month period last year, not what has happened since October, not including 2026 so far.

I have friends who worry that family members who are American citizens will be detained – perhaps detained the way the Pro-Publica article describes - because of foreign ancestry, because they don’t look white.

I also have friends who worry their peaceful protesting will become targets for ICE or pro-ICE counter-protesting. That same Pro-Publica report said more than 130 American citizens – including elected officials – had been detained, “accused of assaulting or impeding officers” during that 6-month period.

Last week, rumors swirling around the state that ICE plans to descend on Maine led not only to comments from Governor Mills and the mayors of Lewiston and Portland but also a post on X (formerly Twitter) saying a “Pine Guard” unit is forming that “will have undercover units within the left-wing protests/riots” and that “Any assaults, property damage, theft, impeding officers, or violence towards counter protesters will lead to the deployment of the Pine Guard.”

Protesters continue to gather in front of the gazebo in Lincoln almost every Saturday, from noon to 1pm. Protesting peacefully. Protestors from across the political spectrum: mostly independents and Democrats but even some Republicans participate. United in concern about the direction of our nation.

Be careful out there. Avoid even the hint of violence. Don’t give ICE or whatever the “Pine Guard” is an excuse to take action. And maybe start carrying birth certificates or passports – if only to remind us what non-white American citizens are now facing in our nation.

And next month, come see Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Hannah Pingree. She will be our featured speaker on Sunday, February 15th at our monthly LLRDC meeting. We will also be talking about plans for the Democratic caucuses for communities all across the Lincoln Lakes Region - to be held on Sunday, March 1st upstairs in the Region III Technical School here in Lincoln.
