Possum Valley, Nebraska

Possum Valley, Nebraska Possum Valley is one of the finest examples of a turn-of-the-20th century farmstead in Nebraska. Ja Son Captain Fairchild purchased the farmstead.

Herman Benjamin and Hannah Jane (Alderman) Fairchild from Ohio settled in the verdant Little Blue River valley in 1899. Herman, along with his three sons Herman, Captain, and Robert operated a large sorghum processing facility and later started a brick manufacturing business that is now Endicott Clay Products Company. The Victorian home was constructed in 1904 and a large barn was constructed in 1

907 to house the horses required for their enterprises. His daughter Jane (Fairchild) Bakewell and her husband Robert purchased the farm. They have made many improvements, but have retained the original outward aspects of the turn-of the 20th century farmstead.

Three Bald Eagles were spotted south of the railroad bridge in Possum Valley Friday morning. It was an impressive visual as they took off up the Little Blue River. The Nebraska Game and Parks reports that Bald Eagles sightings are "soaring" as Nebraska hosted a record 146 known bald eagle nests in 2014, with adult pairs actively incubating eggs or tending to young in 111 of them.

The little house was fairly bursting with good food stored away for the long winter. The pantry and the shed and the cellar were full, and so was the attic. ~Laura Ingalls Wilder
