We are thrilled to announce that Ms. Katie Andan has been named as a San Diego County Teacher of the Year! After being selected as the EUSD Teacher of the Year, Katie completed an extensive application process and was interviewed by a panel of judges including representatives from SDCOE, the 9th District PTA, and districts throughout the county. The five teachers chosen to represent the county were selected for their incredible passion, dedication, and the impact they have had on their students throughout their career. Katie will now move forward to the state level representing EUSD and San Diego County!

Katie is more than deserving of this distinguished award and exemplifies everything it means to ignite the limitless potential of all learners. Katie’s goal as a teacher is for her students to feel safe, seen, and heard every day, and in every situation. She has taught 5th grade at La Costa Heights Elementary for the past 12 years and has 20 years of classroom experience. Drawing from a teaching career that spans the globe, Katie showcases different perspectives and helps her students understand and practice empathy. At the end of each school day, Katie hopes kids leave her classroom feeling like they contributed, learned something new, exhibited critical thinking, held themselves to high expectations, and are excited to come back the next day. Congratulations, Katie! 🎉

Thank you to the San Diego County Office of Education and our amazing LCH students and staff for making the announcement so special!

Say hello to the school tour guides at OPE! 👋 School tours for next year’s incoming families have been in full swing across the district, and at OPE, the tours are completely student-led, with support from Principal Kay. Prospective families are welcomed by student ambassadors who greet visitors, deliver a thoughtfully prepared presentation, and guide guests on a campus tour.

Selected through an application process these student tour guides showcase their confidence as skilled communicators and demonstrate perfect professionalism on every tour. Families consistently leave inspired by the authentic, firsthand perspective shared by the students, while also getting an up-close look at the empowered learning environment that makes EUSD so special. We love seeing student leadership in action!

Student leaders from Flora Vista joined MTSS TOSA Elizabeth Erbes and Principal Oyagi to present at the February Board meeting. They showcased their Safe School Ambassadors program and introduced Fun Fun Friends, a recess initiative they designed especially for kindergarten students.

Fun Fun Friends is a student-led effort where upper-grade students organize structured games and create meaningful connection opportunities for kindergarteners once a week during recess. Not only does the program provide a more fun and inclusive recess experience for younger students, but it also gives these leaders the opportunity to grow as wellness advocates, confident collaborators, and skilled communicators.

This initiative is a perfect example EUSD’s core values of joy, belonging, innovation, and service in action. Way to go, Falcons!

We’re grateful for our students and staff who consistently strive to bring more joy, compassion, and kindness into the world each and every day.
