Saturday evening, February 21, 2026, the Officers and Members of the Greensville Volunteer Fire Department convened for the annual awards and installation banquet. During this prestigious event, awards were presented for the year 2025, and the Officers for 2026 were formally installed, as detailed below.

NUMEROUS CALLS FOR SERVICE

Station 3 has had a busy day of running calls. As detailed below:

Around 10:41, Station 3 was dispatched to the 3100 block of Sussex Drive for a report of an adult aged male stuck in a structural collapse. Chief 301 arrived on scene and found he was able to successfully extricate the adult male prior to Rescue 3 and Engine 3-2 arriving on scene. The patient was transported to the local ER with minor injuries. No first responder injuries reported.

At 12:26, Station 3 was dispatched to the 900 block of West Atlantic Street for a reported fire alarm. Prior to the first unit responding, dispatch advised it was a false alarm.

At 14:32, Station 3 was dispatched to the area of Low Ground Road and Little Texas Road for a report of a brush fire. Chief 301 arrived on scene and advised it was a controlled burn.

At 17:02, Station 3 was dispatched to the 3 MM Northbound on Interstate 95 for a report of a commercial vehicle accident with injuries. Deputy Chief 302 arrived on scene to a single Tractor Trailer with heavy damages, with the tractor sitting upright but the trailer overturned. It was found to have 2 people involved, 1 of which was transported to the local ER for evaluation. No other civilian injuries were found. Also, no first responder injuries were reported.

At 18:35, Engine 3-2 was returning to the city from the wreck on the Interstate and came upon a 2 vehicle accident in the 1400 block of skippers road. No civilian or first responder injuries reported.

At 19:35, Station 3 was dispatched to the 3100 block of Massie Branch Road for a report of a brush fire. Deputy Chief 302 arrived on scene with several wooded areas on fire. It was determined that a controlled burn had gotten out of hand by the landowner. Units quickly arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. The scene was marked under control after 45 minutes of suppression. No civilian or first responder injuries were reported.

MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY STRUCTURE FIRE

Around 19:30, Station 3 was dispatched to 1325 Skippers Road for a reported structure fire. Chief 301 arrived on scene to a 3-story apartment complex with heavy fire showing on the alpha side with extension into the roof. Crews arrived on scene shortly after and began suppression operations. Primary and secondary searches were negative. Mutual aid was requested from Jarratt. Crews made an aggressive attack and were able to safely and efficiently put the fire out. Extensive salvage and overhaul was conducted. A total of 12 apartments were affected during the fire with multiple residents becoming displaced as a result. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist those displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time. No civilian or first responder injuries were reported. All fire and rescue units returned to service.

RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

At 3 AM, Station 3 was dispatched to the 200 block of Park Avenue for a report of a residential structure fire. Chief 301 arrived on scene to find a 2 story residential structure fully involved within close proximity to two homes. Crews arrived on scene shortly after and began suppression operations. Primary and secondary searches were negative in all affected structures. The scene was marked under control around 3:45 AM. The Red Cross was called in to assist with the families in the adjacent homes. The primary involved structure was deemed vacant. The scene is under investigation at this time. All fire units cleared around 5 AM. No civilian or first responder injuries were reported.

COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

At 18:27, Station 3 was dispatched to Davis Street for a report of a commercial structure fire. Units arrived on scene to find the old Emporia Georgia-Pacific plant fully involved as picture below. High winds during the fire also carried embers into wooded areas around the plant and even across Highway 58. Mutual aid units were requested from Jarratt, Lawrenceville, Sussex Courthouse, Dolphin, Drewryville, Capron, Courtland, Boykins, and Colonial Heights. Units on scene were able to knock the brunt of the fire down after a few hours. We will have units remaining on scene throughout the night and tomorrow to ensure the fire is contained to the facility property. No injuries were reported.

We would like to thank all of our mutual aid departments, Virginia Forestry, Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad, and the City of Emporia Emergency Management team that came to our assistance
tonight.

COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

At 04:43, Stations 3 & 4 were dispatched to Interstate 95 southbound at Exit 8 for a report of a commercial vehicle into the woods. Assistant Chief 303 arrived on scene to find a tractor trailer into the woods upright with the trailer detached from the tractor. Crews arrived shortly after. Fortunately, the driver had minor injuries. Crews were on scene around an hour. The off ramp remained shut down for several hours while wrecker crews cleared the wreckage from the off ramp and woods. All fire and rescue units cleared and returned to service.

RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

At 15:43 hours, Station 3 was dispatched to the 1700 block of Beef Road for a reported structure fire. Chief 301 arrived on scene to a single wide trailer fully involved. Crews arrived shortly after and conducted primary and secondary searches which were both negative. A single resident was outside the residence upon arrival with no injuries. Crews were on scene for around 1.5 hours. No injuries were reported. All fire units cleared and returned to service.

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT - INTERSTATE 95

At 13:49, Stations 3 & 4 were dispatched to Interstate 95 Southbound at the 12MM for a report of a commercial motor vehicle accident. Assistant Chief 303 arrived on scene to find a tractor trailer into the woods with extensive damages. Fire & EMS crews arrived on scene to find the driver and lone occupant had been ejected and had succumbed to injuries. Please avoid the area while law enforcement conducts their investigation of the accident.
