The Flame of Hope passes through Emporia!

Over the last two days, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office had the absolute honor of welcoming and supporting the Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics as it made its way through our community.

With the amazing help and encouragement of our local Special Olympics participants, dedicated law enforcement officers from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Emporia Police Department, and Emporia State University Police & Safety, proudly carried the Flame of Hope through the streets of Emporia. Every step taken is a step in support of Special Olympics and the amazing athletes they represent. This tradition showcases the power of inclusion, teamwork, and achievement for athletes across the state.

Thank you to everyone who participated, cheered along the route, and helped make this year's run such a massive success.

Betty, the non-emergency, AI call taker for the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center has had some updates! She has expanded her reach and now has added call types that she can assist you with. Remember, Betty does not take emergency calls. Any call that is emergent, that Betty is not programmed to handle, or that escalates will be transferred to a 911 Communications Officer immediately.

By interacting with Betty, you allow your 911 professionals to be locked in to the emergency 911 calls, to field moderate emergencies, and to be focused on responder radio traffic and safety.

Betty can take the following call types:

Controlled Burns
Civil Standby/Keep the Peace
Criminal Damage
Custody Exchange/Custody Problem
Train Crossing Issues
Road Debris
Traffic Hazards
Vacation Requests
Lost Property
Found Property
Parking Problems
Lockouts
Noise Complaints
Motorist Assists
Door Admits (ESU ONLY)
Non Injury Accidents
Non-Emergency Alarms
Animal Issues
Jail Transfers

Betty is also giving critical updates. Betty is currently listing the roadways to be aware of for tomorrow’s Unbound Gravel starts. This feature is being tested at Lyon County for deployment across the country. This will allow Lyon County to give important information, quickly, during prolonged or emergency situations. We are excited to have this tool during Unbound!
