How Do Corgis Survive the Heat?
Corgis may be adorable and fluffy, but their thick double coat can make hot weather dangerous if they overheat. Here are some important summer safety tips to help keep your corgi cool, safe, and happy during heat waves:
1. Stay Hydrated
Always provide fresh, cool water
Add ice cubes if needed
Bring water during walks or outings
2. Walk Smart
Walk early morning or later evening
Avoid hot pavement between 11am–4pm
Test the pavement with your hand before walking
3. Keep Them Cool
Use fans or air conditioning
Cooling mats and damp towels help
Wipe paws, belly, and armpits with cool water
4. Provide Shade & Ventilation
Never leave dogs in a parked car
Keep them in shaded, ventilated areas
Even cracked windows are NOT enough in extreme heat
5. Adjust Food & Treats
Smaller meals during very hot days
Frozen treats can help cool them down
Watermelon (seedless), cucumber, and blueberries are great options
6. Know Signs of Heatstroke
Watch for:
Heavy panting
Excessive drooling
Vomiting
Weakness
Confusion or collapse
If you notice these signs:
• Move your dog to a cool place immediately
• Offer water
• Contact your veterinarian right away
7. Cool Down Playtime
Kiddie pools
Sprinklers
Frozen toys
Short play sessions
8. Groom Smart
Brush regularly to remove loose fur
Do NOT shave double-coated dogs completely
Their coat actually helps regulate temperature
9. Listen to Your Dog
Every dog is different.
Senior dogs, puppies, overweight dogs, and short-nosed breeds can overheat faster.
Stay safe this summer and give your corgi lots of cool naps, belly rubs, and shade.
