The Ideal Standard vs. The Corrupted Workflow
The Objective Blind Standard: In a scientifically sound framework, analysts are required to evaluate unknown evidence independently—characterizing mixtures, determining alleles, and setting baselines entirely before ever viewing a suspect's known reference sample.
The Target-Driven Workflow:
In practice, labs frequently receive the suspect's and victim's known reference samples alongside the crime scene evidence. This introduces immediate cognitive anchoring and confirmation bias.
How "Reverse Engineering" Corrupts Complex Samples
When handling pristine, single-source samples, comparison is straightforward. However, when dealing with complex, degraded, or low-template samples (such as touch DNA or minute trace amounts), the methodology breaks down:
Subjective Interpretation of Artifacts: Low-level samples are plagued by artifacts like allele drop-out, drop-in, stutter peaks, and baseline noise.
Fitting Data to the Target: With the suspect's profile sitting directly in front of them, analysts can easily rationalize ambiguous peaks—labeling a faint artifact as a "real" allele because it matches the target, or dismissing conflicting markers as mere "noise."
Circular Reasoning:
Instead of the evidence independently pointing toward an individual, the suspect's known profile is unlawfully used as a template to "read" an otherwise uninterpretable or inconclusive sample, manufacturing a false sense of certainty.
Conclusion
Using known exemplars to interpret degraded or low-level mixtures subverts independent scientific testing into a confirmation exercise.
Presenting such manufactured consistency as infallible science severely undermines reliability and due process. It basically undermines the INTELLECT of our judges and our Jury and the entire United States of America!
