Twenty-five years later, September 11 remains etched in our collective memory.

We honor the lives lost, the families forever changed and the first responders who showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable danger.

We also hold close the compassion, courage and sense of community that emerged in the days that followed.

Today, we pause to honor those we lost and those who showed us what it means to stand together.

We will never forget.

Think blood collectors just draw blood? Think again! They're caregivers, listeners, problem-solvers, and lifesavers all rolled into one. In honor of National Blood Collectors Week, here are a few fun facts about the amazing people behind every blood donation:

🩸 They are the first link in the lifesaving chain. Every blood transfusion starts with a blood collector. Without them, there is no blood supply for patients in need.

🩸 They collect more than blood. Blood collectors often hear donors' life stories, celebrate donation milestones, calm nervous first-time donors, and build lasting relationships with regular donors.

🩸 A single blood collector may help hundreds of patients each month. Since one blood donation can help two or more patients, the impact of a collector's work multiplies quickly.

🩸 They are part scientist, part caregiver. Blood collectors must follow strict medical procedures while also making donors feel comfortable and cared for.

🩸 They are unofficial snack experts. After helping thousands of donors through post-donation recovery, collectors know exactly which juice and snack combinations are donor favorites!

🩸 They help save lives without ever meeting the patients. Most blood collectors never know exactly who receives the blood they collect, but their work helps trauma victims, cancer patients, transplant recipients, premature babies, and many others.

From all of us at Vitalant, thank you to our incredible blood collectors. Your expertise, care, and commitment help save lives every day, and we're proud to celebrate you during National Blood Collectors Week and beyond. ❤️

In recognition of National Preparedness Month and the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Vitalant is encouraging blood donations to help ensure a ready blood supply before emergencies occur.

Donors who give blood now through Sept. 11 will receive a Flight 93 commemorative t-shirt while supplies last. T-shirts will be available at the Pittsburgh region's eight donation centers and participating blood drives.

By donating blood, Western Pennsylvanians can pay tribute to the lives lost on 9/11 while helping ensure patients have access to the lifesaving transfusions they need every day.

💯 donations. Hundreds of lives touched.

Today we're celebrating Robert for reaching an extraordinary milestone of 100 blood donations with Vitalant! 🩸

Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come from volunteer donors who take the time to give. Every day, patients rely on blood transfusions for surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatments, and chronic illnesses.

Because of donors like Robert, hospitals have the lifesaving blood they need to care for patients in critical moments.

Ready to make a difference? Visit Vitalant.org to schedule your next donation appointment and help save lives in our community.

🩸 National Blood Collectors Week Spotlight: Meet Stacey 🩸

For 42 years, Stacey has dedicated her career to helping save lives through blood donation, and her passion for the mission comes from a deeply personal place.

When Stacey's younger sister was just a year old, she was diagnosed with leukemia and required chemotherapy and multiple blood transfusions. Witnessing the lifesaving impact of blood donors on her own family inspired Stacey to pursue a career dedicated to helping others.

Over the years, she's comforted countless donors, especially those who are nervous about giving blood for the first time. One of the things she enjoys most is helping people understand how one donation can help multiple patients and why every donor matters.

"I've had the opportunity to work with some of the most dedicated people I know and have made lifelong friendships along the way," Stacey shares. "Working at Vitalant is so rewarding because you know your job has a purpose. You're helping people every day."

As she nears retirement, Stacey says she can't imagine having chosen any other career.

Outside of work, Stacey enjoys cooking, gardening, spending time with her husband Willie, their children, and their grandchildren, Andie, Jack, and baby Roman. She has also dedicated years of service to her community, including 12 years on her local school board, six of them as president. Today, she remains active in her church as a Eucharistic minister and lector.

Thank you, Stacey, for more than four decades of compassion, dedication, and commitment to helping patients in need. ❤️

Inspired by Stacey's story? Honor National Blood Collectors Week by scheduling your next blood donation. Every donation has the power to help save lives and support patients in our community. Visit vitalant.org to make your appointment today.

Every day, blood donors help save the lives of hospital patients, trauma victims, and those undergoing critical treatments. During National Blood Donation Week (Sept. 1-7) and today on National Blood Donation Day, we're grateful to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine for supporting efforts to raise awareness of the constant need for blood donations. Thank you to all who roll up a sleeve and encourage others to do the same.

For 23 years, Gretchen has celebrated her son Alex right around his birthday with a blood drive in his honor.

When Alex was just two-and-a-half years old, he was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer that affects young children, often developing in the adrenal gland. Throughout his rigorous cancer treatment, Alex received blood and platelets, which allowed him periods of time when he felt good enough to play with his younger brother Neil, memories that hold a special place in their mother’s heart. Alex passed away after 14 months of treatment.

Family and friends come out each year to donate blood in honor of Alex and celebrate his birthday with a cake. Having turned loss into an opportunity to help others, Gretchen and her husband Chuck are dedicated advocates for blood donation. We thank them for their continued commitment to saving lives, ensuring blood products are on the shelves when they are needed by hospitals and patients, and spreading the message of hope for other families facing childhood cancer.

Join Gretchen and Chuck in turning remembrance into action. This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, give blood in honor of Alex and help provide the lifesaving support that so many children and families depend on. Schedule your donation at vitalant.org.
