Upcoming Public Comment Meeting on the Delisting of the Black River as an Area of Concern!

September 16 - 5-6pm at Lakeview Park Sunset Terrace in Lorain.

The Black River Area of Concern includes the lower 15 river miles and the French Creek watershed.

Lorain County Ohio Government - Last week the Commissioners scheduled a meeting to discuss the improvement of Ludwig Ditch in South Amherst Village and New Russia Township. This project will assist the partner community of South Amherst reduce the incidence and severity of flooding within the Redferns Subdivision which includes Elm, Fern and Maple streets as well as serves as an outlet for a portion of the South Amherst Cemetery drainage. The project will also benefit some land in New Russia Township that is tilled and provide a good outlet into Beaver Creek.

The blue dots in the attached map are identified obstructions along the ditch.

Congratulations to the Black River AOC Advisory Committee current and past for getting to this step in the delisting process.

Lorain County Ohio Government - Last week the Black River AOC Advisory Committee took a major step by authorizing a letter to the Ohio Lake Erie Commission and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency supporting the "Delisting" of the Black River as an Area of Concern.

Last week the last of the Beneficial Use Impairments had been removed clearing the way for this step. Now the USEPA and partner agencies will be reviewing the documents to confirm if the Black River is ready for delisting. Over the coming weeks updates on the process will be added.

Good News!

🌊Final BUI removed from the Black River AOC!

The Degradation of Benthos BUI was officially removed from the Black River Area of Concern. This marks the last of 9 BUIs, or impairments of the ecological use of the Black River, to be removed. The Black River AOC is now eligible to delist!🎉
