*Emotionally charged subject (for us)*
This northern flying squirrel was caught on a glue trap. He is wet from the vegetable oil the finder used to remove him.
We have been seeing an increase usage in glue traps lately. I absolutely despise these traps more than anything else I have seen in this field and I have seen pretty much everything you could think of.
Glue traps are incredibly inhumane. They have been banned in other countries and from certain stores in the US. They are not species specific so any animal can get caught on them, including pets. I have personally removed squirrels, mice, rats and bats from them. Why would I remove a mouse or rat from a glue trap? Isn’t that their purpose? Thankfully, once the people saw how much the animals were suffering they brought them in so I could remove them.
When animals are caught on these traps they usually fall into an uncomfortable position. While trying to free themselves they become stuck in more glue. They dislocate limbs, their skin is torn off, they suffocate or starve to death. Sometimes they chew their own limbs off trying to escape. Once they are caught I’ve heard of people just “throwing them into the garbage” to die, suffocating them or drowning them. Can you imagine this happening to you? To your pet? All animals have a central nervous system. They all feel pain and fear. No living creature deserves to die this way.
Please do not use glue traps (or poison) for rodent control. Snap traps are a much kinder option. They are reusable-putting less waste into our landfills, cheaper and kill instantly. If rodents are getting into your home you need to find where they are getting in and seal the entrance.
What do you do if you find an animal stuck to a glue trap?
•Place paper towel over the remaining exposed glue so that the animal cannot become more trapped. Be very cautious around their heads as they may try to bite you.
•Put a towel in a box and then place the glue trap into the box.
•Contact and bring to a permitted rehabber immediately.
•Please do not try to remove the animal from the trap. Doing so can dislocate limbs, break little bones or cause them so much stress that they die. It’s also a very painful process. Animals need to be sedated to be removed from these traps.
•Throw away all of your glue traps and buy some snap traps or live traps. In the summer you can use live traps and relocate them (message us for appropriate release information).
Thank you to the people who brought this guy in. If we can change even one person’s mind about using glue traps we are fulfilling our mission.
