The Elwood Fire Protection District would like to extend our sincere thanks to Village President Doug Jenco and the Village of Elwood for recognizing September 11 as "September 11 Remembrance Day" in the Village of Elwood.

This proclamation is a meaningful reminder to pause, remember, and honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the countless first responders, military members, and ordinary citizens who demonstrated extraordinary courage and sacrifice.

We are grateful to the Village of Elwood for helping ensure that the stories of September 11—and the values of service, sacrifice, freedom, and unity—continue to be remembered by future generations.

Thank you, President Jenco, and the Village of Elwood, for honoring those who were lost and those who continue to serve and protect our communities.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

📢 Low-Interest Loan Assistance Available for July 27 Storm Damage

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering low-interest disaster loans to eligible Will County residents, businesses, and organizations impacted by the July 27 severe storms.

Who can apply?
🏠 Homeowners
🔑 Renters
🏢 Businesses
🤝 Private nonprofit organizations

Applicants must be located in a declared disaster area and meet applicable eligibility requirements.

How to Apply:

📍 In Person beginning Friday, August 21 at 10 AM:

📢 PUBLIC NOTICE: TRAINING AT LLOYD ERICKSON PARK
The Elwood Fire Protection District will be hosting a Rope Operations Certification training on Thursday, August 20, from approximately 8:00 AM until noon at Lloyd Erickson Park.

As part of the training, firefighters will be conducting a simulated slope evacuation using ropes, rigging, and a rescue basket.

If you are visiting the park during this time, you may see emergency personnel and equipment in the area. Please do not be alarmed—this is only a training exercise.

Beginning Monday, August 17, a Multi-Agency Resource Center will be open to all Will County residents at the Village of University Park Community Room.
📍 90 Town Center Drive, University Park
⏰ Monday–Friday: 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
⏰ Saturday: 9:00 AM–1:00 PM
The Resource Center will serve as a place for residents to connect with storm recovery information, resources, and available assistance. Help may include:
• SNAP replacement benefits
• Insurance claim navigation assistance
• Cleanup support
• Emotional support
• Veteran support
• School supplies
• Pet supplies
• And more
Agencies currently scheduled to participate include American Red Cross, Illinois Department of Human Services, Illinois Department of Insurance, Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Salvation Army, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County, Will County Animal Protection Services, Will County Health Department, and Will County Regional Office of Education.

Here are a few reminders:

🚸 Watch carefully for children crossing the street.
🚌 Stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
📵 Put your phone away and stay focused on the road.

🚨 GENERATOR SAFETY REMINDER 🚨
With widespread power outages following the recent storms, many residents are using generators. We are seeing reports of CO alarms sounding because generators are being used inside homes and garages.
⚠️ PLEASE REMEMBER:
✅ Run generators OUTSIDE ONLY, at least 20 feet from your home.
✅ Point exhaust AWAY from your home, windows, doors, and vents.
❌ NEVER run a generator inside your home or garage — even with the garage door open.
❌ Never use a generator in a basement, shed, porch, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space.
🚨 If your CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. Do not ignore or silence the alarm.
Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and potentially deadly.
OUTSIDE. 20 FEET AWAY. EXHAUST POINTED AWAY.
