– Been an educator for over half my life, at the college and university levels
– Concerned about education in our public school systems. Hence, I decided to run for the Alma School Board this fall 2022. I am actively involved in Community Baptist Church of Alma since I retired in 2016, and have been active in churches wherever I have lived. I have been a Christian si
nce I was a young girl. I have participated in short term missions’ trips each June with the Navajo in AZ/NM for the last several years. I also enjoy singing in the local Sweet Adelines’ chorus, the Heart of Michigan Chorus. I was born in Flint, MI, and lived in Grand Blanc where my Dad was pastor of a Baptist church there. When I was seven years old we moved to California, living in Long Beach and Blythe for about 7 years. In 1960 we moved back to Greenville, MI, where I began high school and graduated in 1964. While an undergraduate at MSU, I married Gary Higgins in 1967. We settled in the Alma area in 1973. In 1976, we bought our house on 13 acres in Elwell, MI. We have two sons, Jack and Jim, who attended Alma Public Schools their whole lives, graduating in the 1990s. My grandkids are now students in the Alma public school system. I was widowed in 2004. 1969 – Obtained BS in MedicaI Technology (Medical Laboratory Science), from
Michigan State University
Interned at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, MI
1970-1994 – Worked as Med. Laboratory Scientist in several hospital
laboratories for 25 yrs, with 20 yrs at Saginaw Medical Center (now Covenant Healthcare). Concurrently, I was adjunct faculty in various medical programs at:
Mid-Michigan Community College, Harrison, MI
Saginaw Valley State University, University Center, MI
Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI
1996 – Obtained MS in Clinical Laboratory Science from MSU, with an emphasis
in Educational Systems Development (Instructional Design). Went into education full time in 1997:
1997-2009 – Indiana University Northwest, Gary, IN, as Faculty and Program Director of
the accredited MLT (Assoc. Degree) and Phlebotomy Tech. programs for
12 yrs, until programs were closed in 2009
2009-2016 – Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa, IA, where, as Faculty and
Program Director, I developed and taught in the new Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Assistant & Phlebotomy Technician programs
2016 – Retired and returned to Elwell, MI
2017-2018 – Adjunct faculty at MSU in their Clinical Laboratory Science program,
2 semesters
