There is a threat of severe weather this afternoon and evening in our area. The main hazard during that time frame is the potential for damaging wind and the possibility of an isolated tornado can't be ruled out. Our area may see wind gusts of 60mph with these storms. The anticipated time frame is between 3:00pm and 10:00pm. Please take this into consideration for your activities this afternoon and into the night.

Latest information from Guilford County Emergency Management regarding Tropical Storm Elsa: Tropical Storm Elsa has made landfall in the northern Gulf Coast of Florida. Forecast models have trended in a way that shifts the anticipated track of the storm a bit to the west since our last update. With this information, it is possible that our area will see more rain and wind from the storm with the most potential for these impacts in Eastern Guilford County toward Burlington. At this time our area is forecast to receive between 1 and 3 inches of rain with locally higher amounts possible. Additionally, central North Carolina may see wind gusts as high as 40mph. Anticipated impacts from the storm will likely occur between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm Thursday.

Beginning this afternoon through Friday, our area has the potential to experience strong to severe storms in the afternoons and evenings. The storms may be capable of producing localized damaging winds and isolated flooding in areas with poor drainage. During this time it is forecast that our area may see 1-3 inches of rain and potentially more in downbursts, leading to a concern for potential flash flooding.

Notice from National Weather Service for today: Thunderstorms will push east from the Mountains, become more numerous, develop into a line and spread east across central NC. Timing of the strongest storms: 3-6 pm in the Triad. The primary threat will be from damaging winds with the strongest storms producing damaging wind gusts in excess 60 mph along with frequent lightning.

There is the potential for severe thunderstorms in the Triad this afternoon mainly between 3pm and 9pm. Storms will be scattered but have the potential for damaging winds, hail, and Lightning. The National Weather Service briefing slide is attached.
