We would like to introduce you to Tayler Mattingly! Tayler joined our service in 2025 and is currently one of our Emergency Medical Technicians (EMR).

She lives just outside of Elmwood with her husband and two kiddos and she has been a great addition our team! You may have seen her out and about on the rig for community events.

Thank you for your service, Chris. 🇺🇸🚒. The Durand Fire Department as well as Chris’ family and friends are in our thoughts. He was a great guy and he will be missed.

With profound and heartfelt sadness, we have to announce the passing of Firefighter Chris J. Bates. Chris joined the Durand Fire Department in 2007, served as a Lieutenant and Training Officer on the department and was a current Senior Member. Chris was an amazing firefighter and US Marine Veteran. More importantly he was a brilliant husband, father and grandfather to his family. Rest easy brother, we’ll take the watch from here. Godspeed Chris Bates.

Monthly EMS Training 🚑

This month, our team focused on diabetes and neurological emergencies. Our members split up into teams of four - practicing patient assessment, treatment, and teamwork through hands-on scenarios.

Elmwood EMS and other emergency vehicles will be participating in this training tonight at the Elmwood Schools. This is a pre-planned training exercise and there is no need for concern.

**TRAINING DRILL**

Pierce County Emergency Management, Public Health and Human Services, and our local emergency response partners will be conducting a Radiological Reception Center Training Exercise on Thursday evening, May 28, 2026, at Elmwood Schools.

This is part of our ongoing preparedness training to ensure we are ready to respond in the event of a radiological emergency affecting Pierce County.

Please note: THIS IS ONLY A TRAINING EXERCISE. There is no cause for concern.

Residents may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles and official personnel at the school during the exercise.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to prepare and train for emergency situations.

It’s been a minute since we have done a spotlight so here is one to kick off the holiday weekend!

Travis Hartung joined our service in 2009. He works full-time for Pierce County and is also the Chief for the Elmwood Area Fire Department.

Every month we have a business meeting followed by some training in order to keep our skills polished.

The month of May brought our quarterly refresher where we focused on airways and CPR.

Here you can see Kate, Casey & Megan using the Lucas - a battery powered device that is used in a cardiac arrest to deliver chest compressions.
