Architecture of Elmira, NY

Architecture of Elmira, NY A look at the unique architecture found in Elmira, NY dating back to 1829. Most of the houses were built as single family, some duplexes.

Elmira's unique character stems from its architecture, a catalog of Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Italianate, Eastlake, Second Empire, Tudor, Queen Anne, Italian Villa, and Stick. The Near Westside Historic District is the highest concentration of Victorian-Era Homes in the State, ranging from about 1840-1910. The District is roughly bounded by W. First Street to the North, Hoffman Street to th

e west, N. Main Street to the east, and the Chemung River to the South. Other Smaller victorian neighborhoods include Maple Avenue Historic District, Clinton-Columbia Historic District, and Strathmont Park. Strathmont Park is a high-end neighborhood in the west part of the city adjacent to West Elmira, and is home to the largest single family home in Chemung County, The Strathmont Estate. A 17,000 square foot mansion built in 1929, it includes a massive Tudor-Style carriage house featuring a 7 story tower. While most of the homes in this neighborhood were built approximately between 1920-1960, they feature grand Colonial Mansions with flares of Victorian Revival.
