🚨 Winter Storm Reminder 🚨

When the snow is falling and conditions are tough, help us keep 911 lines open for true emergencies.

✅ Call 911 for medical emergencies, fires, life-threatening situations, or motor vehicle accidents.

❌ Do not call 911 for power outages, snow removal, or general road and weather conditions.

Using 911 appropriately helps first responders get to those who need them the most.

This morning, Deputies from the Chemung County Deputy Sheriff’s Association partnered with our Dispatchers from the Communications Center, and Officers from Horseheads Police Department, Elmira Heights Police Department, Elmira Police Department and the New York State Police for this year’s Shop With A Cop event at Walmart in the Town of Horseheads.

We would like to thank all that participated, including Walmart, Giuseppe’s Pizzeria, Great American Cookie Company, First Transit, Mike Coghlan, the Theetge family, and all of the helpers at Horseheads Intermediate School.

A great time was had by all, as students from around Chemung County shopped for their families for the upcoming holiday. We will continue to add more pictures as they come in.

We wish you all a happy and healthy Christmas this year!

It is truly inspiring when we acknowledge heroes like Investigator Theetge, who embody unwavering dedication. We are grateful to The Wounded Blue for recognizing Investigator Theetge's unrelenting commitment to his community.

HONORING INV. MICHAEL THEETGE

Today, Chemung County Sheriff’s Investigator Mike Theetge received The Wounded Blue’s Order of the Blue Heart, presented by Founder Randy Sutton — a tribute to extraordinary sacrifice.

During a foot pursuit, a violent struggle left him with a severe TBI, days in a coma, and months of recovery. Yet he refused disability retirement and continues mentoring young officers, showing up for others even while fighting for his own healing.

This is why The Wounded Blue exists: heroes like Investigator Theetge never quit — and neither do we.

News Release 8/27/2025

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn the public about a current scam involving an individual(s) posing to be a representative from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office. Today, we have received numerous calls from a variety of individuals advising that they have been contacted by an individual identifying himself as Sergeant Jim Ritter of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office. According to the complainants, “Sgt. Ritter” has advised them that they have a warrant for their arrest and was requesting money for a court summons and/or Civil Process. The caller is advising that the “warrant of arrest” is for Failure to Appear, Criminal Contempt, or regarding a Civil Process, and even mentions the Honorable Chris Baker as the issuing judge of the warrant(s).

The recipients of these calls are being directed by the caller to respond to either a Dollar General or Family Dollar store to secure money pak cards. The caller remains on the phone with the intended victim, requesting them to then scratch off the code on the back of the cards and give them the number that appears.

Be advised that these calls are fraudulent. No member of the Sheriff’s Office contacts the public under these circumstances demanding money. The Sheriff’s Office is advising the public not to disclose any personal information over the phone, to include credit and/or debit card information, and not to send any type of payment to this person or any person who identifies themselves as a law enforcement officer requesting money under these circumstances. If you do receive a call of this nature, simply end the call immediately or advise the caller that the Sheriff’s Office is aware of this scam.

If you have received one of these calls and/or have been scammed out of any money under these circumstances, please contact the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 607-737-2933 to report same.
