Chief McLean started the afternoon with a smile, stopping to support some local young entrepreneurs by purchasing a refreshing glass of lemonade.

EPD Warning- Catalytic converter theft has returned.

The Elmhurst Police Department has taken four reports of catalytic converter thefts that occurred sometime over the Memorial Day weekend. Vehicles parked in business lots were targeted: two in south Elmhurst on the 900 blocks of Riverside Drive & Rt 83, and two in north Elmhurst on the 200 block of W. Lake Street.

Over the last month, this type of vehicle part theft has increased in our area as the value of certain precious metals have increased. Thieves often target trucks or vehicles with higher ground clearance so they can easily slide under and cut off the catalytic converters with a power saw, often in just seconds.

The public is asked to park their vehicles inside overnight or in well lit areas outside. Call 911 immediately if you spot people looking underneath cars or trucks, operating loud saws outside in parking lots- especially during overnight and early morning hours.

We have hired a contractor to remove and repaint the steel portions of the First Street and Park Avenue bridges. To complete this work, Palmer Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction as crews paint one half of each bridge at a time. Traffic control is expected to begin this week and the project is anticipated to take approximately four weeks to complete.

Neighbors -

I wanted to provide an update on what is going on with the Van Auken and Indiana sidewalks.

Indiana sidewalks
Right now we have not received a schedule from the contractor so we do not have a start date. Those who live on Indiana can expect construction notices in the near future.

Per the contract, the construction must be completed by August 14, 2026.

Van Auken
Staff and our consultant will be walking Van Auken with the pre-final plans yet this week. There is still a good chance that these sidewalks would be completed this year. Stay tuned.

A key component of the IPPc mission is advocacy. Top priorities, based on your feedback, can be found in the graphic below. We're placing these signs in IPP display cases. The IPPc will continue to work with partner organizations (Counties, municipalities, Forest Preserves, Ride Illinois, Active Transportation Alliance, etc) to identify & implement solutions that improve behavior/safety on the Path.
