Toisnot Fire & Rescue VFD was originally formed as two separate departments operating out of a single station: Toisnot Rural Fire and Elm City Fire both volunteer agencies. Toisnot Rural Fire responded to county calls, while Elm City Fire served the town. As the community and its needs evolved, the two departments merged into one unified organization. In 2025, the department officially became Tois

not Fire & Rescue VFD, reflecting the expanded rescue services now provided to our community. We sincerely thank our citizens for their continued support.

🚒 Truck of the Month 🚨

May 2026

Engine 77
1998 International “Pierce”
• 1250 GPM Waterous Pump
• 1000 Gallon Water Tank

Engine 77 serves as a pumper/tanker and currently operates as a reserve engine, while also being utilized as a tanker when needed. Despite its age, Engine 77 continues to play an important role in supporting the department’s operations and response capabilities.

Equipped with essential tools and equipment, Engine 77 is capable of handling a wide range of emergency incidents. As the oldest apparatus in the Toisnot Fire & Rescue fleet, this truck has faithfully served our department and community for many years.

Around this time next year, Engine 77 is expected to retire from service as its replacement apparatus arrives. While change is necessary to meet the growing needs of both the department and the community, Engine 77 will always remain an important part of Toisnot Fire & Rescue history.

Thank you, Engine 77, for your years of dedicated service to our community. đźš’

Tuesday night training was one for the books. Our members spent the evening sharpening critical fireground skills including hose deployment, hose advancement, forcible entry, and victim search techniques.

The members worked extremely hard, pushed themselves physically and mentally, and gained valuable knowledge and experience that will better prepare us to serve our community when it matters most.

We are proud of the dedication and commitment shown by every member involved. Training like this builds stronger firefighters and a stronger department. đźš’

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

At Toisnot Fire & Rescue, Memorial Day carries a special meaning as we remember not only our nation’s fallen heroes, but also recognize the service and sacrifice of our past and present members and board members who proudly served in the military. Their commitment to protecting others—both at home and abroad—reflects the true spirit of service.

As we gather with family and friends today, let us take a moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who gave everything for this nation.

From all of us at Toisnot Fire & Rescue, thank you to all who have served, and we honor those who never made it home.

May we never forget. 🇺🇸🚒

Emergency Services is about more than responding to calls and completing training — it is also about community outreach, public education, and building strong relationships with the citizens we proudly serve.

Over the past several weekends, Toisnot Fire & Rescue has participated in multiple community outreach and public education events throughout our area. These events are vital in helping keep our community safe, informed, and connected while strengthening the bond between the department and the public.

We are extremely fortunate to have dedicated members who willingly give their time and effort to make these events possible. Their commitment to serving both on and off emergency scenes truly reflects the values of our department.

“Prevention Through Education, Service Through Commitment.”

Thank you all for representing Toisnot Fire & Rescue with pride and professionalism.

Everyone at Toisnot Fire & Rescue would like to congratulate Firefighter Truman Surles on successfully completing the Johnston Community College Fire Academy.

On Monday, Toisnot Fire & Rescue, alongside Truman’s family and friends, attended the JCC’s Fire Academy Class 13 graduation ceremony to celebrate this outstanding accomplishment.

Throughout the academy, Truman demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a strong work ethic, investing countless hours of hard work and determination into reaching this milestone. During the ceremony, Captain T. Curlings had the honor of pinning Truman’s official department badge, symbolizing his successful completion of the academy and commitment to the fire service.

Please join us in congratulating Firefighter Surles on this achievement and thanking him for representing Toisnot Fire & Rescue in such a professional and honorable manner. We are proud to have him as part of our department and look forward to his future in the fire service. 👏

Monday night, our department had the opportunity to host First Response Peer Support Network for a mental health awareness class. The timing couldn’t have been more real—just hours before, our crews responded to another very difficult call.

This year has tested us in ways that don’t always get seen. The high-acuity calls, the loss, and the weight we carry don’t just disappear when the tones go quiet.

What Monday night reminded us is simple but critical: we can’t take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves.

Checking in on each other, talking it out, and knowing it’s okay to not be okay—that’s just as important as anything we do on a scene.

The photos attached are notes our Chaplain Lin wrote during the class—simple reminders that hit home: check on each other, don’t be afraid to speak up, and take the time to reset when needed.

We’re grateful for the resources and support, and we encourage all first responders to make their mental health a priority. Stay strong, stay connected, and look out for one another.
