The Hancock County Sheriff's Office maintains this page to share updates and encourage discussion on issues affecting our community. For several years, our policy has prohibited comments that are considered “off-topic,” meaning not related to the original post. A federal judge has determined that such a rule would need to be applied so consistently that it would create an unreasonable administrative burden. As a result, the Sheriff's Office has reevaluated its comments policy and determined that the best approach is one that supports robust public conversation. Therefore, with the exception of a few narrow categories of speech recognized by the Supreme Court as unprotected, we will no longer remove comments. Moving forward, only the following types of comments will be removed: hate speech, “fighting words,” incitement of violence, “true threats,” defamation, fraud, speech integral to criminal conduct, obscenity, and child po*******hy. If you believe a comment falls into one of these categories, please contact the Sheriff's Office to let us know.

Last week, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office hosted a Child and Adolescent Crisis Intervention Training course, often referred to as CIT training. The course was instructed by NAMI Maine (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

This course is designed to train first responders to recognize when a child or adolescent is experiencing a crisis, how to properly respond to the situation, and what resources are available to assist individuals experiencing a crisis related to mental health, behavioral issues, and other challenges.

Deputies Mariza Gionfriddo, Christie Scribner, Dylan Pung, and Anthony Jones, along with Detective Dylan Hall, all attended the training.

This is just one of the many training opportunities the Sheriff’s Office provides to our deputies each year. We firmly believe in investing in our staff and providing them with the best tools, resources, and training available so they are better equipped to serve our communities.

A special thank you to NAMI instructor Delaney Ireland for instructing this course and sharing her knowledge with our staff.

September is National Recovery Month.

To kick off the month, last night Chief Deputy Bill Birch and Lieutenant Dakota Dupuis were invited to attend and represent the sheriff’s office at Healthy Acadia’s Overdose Awareness event at Knowlton Park in Ellsworth.

Multiple community partners participated, and it was great to see the turnout. More importantly, it was an opportunity to connect with members of our communities, have meaningful conversations, and learn more about the resources available to those struggling with substance use.

While we recognize that illegal drugs are against the law, we also believe it is important to approach substance use with compassion and understanding. Addiction affects individuals, families, and entire communities, and sometimes the most important thing we can do is help connect someone with the resources they need.

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, 211 in Maine is a free and confidential service that can connect individuals and families with resources and support throughout the state.

Although overdose deaths have decreased in Maine in recent years, the number of lives still being lost is significant. Every one of those deaths represents a person—a family member, friend, coworker, or loved one—and each loss has a lasting and tragic impact on the people left behind.

UPDATE: JOLLEAN HAS BEEN SAFELY LOCATED.

🚨 MISSING PERSON

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Jollean Rivers, 41 years of age.

Jollean was last seen at approximately 10:00 p.m. on August 27th, 2026, walking in the area of Taunton Drive in Sullivan. She was last seen wearing a teal-colored tank top and pajama bottoms.

Anyone who has seen Jollean or has information regarding her whereabouts is asked to contact the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office at 207-667-7575.

On Friday, July 24th, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., there will be a gathering on Route 3 in Trenton for the formal dedication ceremony and unveiling of the memorial highway signs honoring Deputy Luke Gross.

During the ceremony, the Ellsworth Police Department will detour traffic at the intersection of Beechland Road and Route 3 to Bayside Road. Likewise, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office will detour traffic at the intersection of Jordan River Road and Route 3 onto Jordan River Road.

The ceremony is expected to last approximately 10–15 minutes. Once it has concluded, traffic will resume its normal flow.
