“A shelter gave us the ability, safety and support we needed to move out of crisis toward stability at a very critical moment.” Maine cannot afford to lose more shelters: pressherald.com/2026/02/20/rural-maine-shelters-could-face-closure-without-more-state-funding-directors-say/?uuid=b2d90d61-8928-476b-b676-67f14bb9606a&lid=224701

Thank you, Homeworthy, H.O.M.E. Inc, Homeless Services of Aroostook, Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services, Rumford Group Homes, and all of our shelter partners advocating for permanent, increased emergency shelter funding!

Advocacy in action! Help support Maines homeless shelter network.

Members of the Maine Emergency Shelter Directors Coalition gathered in Augusta yesterday to advocate for ongoing funding support for Maine's emergency shelters.

Preble Street’s 164 shelter beds at four emergency shelters in Portland and Bangor are full almost every single night of the year to meet the needs of vulnerable Mainers. More than 500 individuals used our shelters last year, representing all of Maine’s 16 counties.

Helping someone stabilize and develop a plan to exit homelessness is significantly easier when they are staying in a shelter. While we work to build permanent, long-term housing and homelessness solutions, it is important to recognize that shelters often operate as stepping stones toward housing. Without them, the solutions that we are all working toward become much harder to put in place.
