Protecting Night Skies from Light Pollution

On clear nights in northern Door County, the Milky Way still splashes across the sky – a view that’s growing measurably fainter, pushing Newport State Park closer to the edge of losing its rare, certified darkness.

In response, the Town of Liberty Grove passed a resolution on March 4 to preserve dark skies, reduce light pollution, protect wildlife and promote energy-efficient lighting. Motivated by concern for Newport’s rare designation as a Dark Sky Park, it may be the first formal local effort to limit the advance of artificial light beyond some lighting controls for signs and a few case-by-case conditions.

“Everybody sees the threat; everybody sees something has to be done,” Town Board Chair Nancy Goss said.

The resolution calls for developing outdoor-lighting guidelines, converting town-owned lights to dark-sky-friendly standards and working with neighboring communities to preserve the peninsula’s night skies.

Happy Spring! Update on conditions at Newport: road to the park is clear. Park road is clear. Parking lot 3 is partially clear. Trails are not groomed; no more trail grooming for the season.

If you plan to hike or snowshoe, expect to climb over deep snowbanks to access trails. Expect 2+ feet of wet snow on trails. It is 45 degrees at the park this afternoon. From blizzard to fast thaw: this is how we roll in March.

Newport State Park remains inaccessible from the Blizzard Elsa fallout. We are waiting on big-rig snow removal equipment to help clear the road and parking lots. We appreciate your patience as we work through this - along with the rest of Door County.

Our 36th annual Candlelight Ski-Hike at Newport was magical, and we hope you enjoyed yourselves! Extra special thanks to ALL the NWS volunteers and park staff who lit candles, stoked fires, baked cookies, managed traffic, and helped our guests find their way to trailheads. And mega thanks to Trish and Jim Black for coordinating it all. We are so grateful to you both!

As of today, Europe Bay Trail, Hotz Trail up to the old cabin site, and Monarch Trail have been groomed and cleared of trees (except for one large tree still down on the west side of Europe Bay Trail south of Europe Bay Road. East side is clear). Precipitation and temps have been all over the place, so conditions will change day to day.
