Congratulations, Nicholas! πŸŽ‰

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to UConn ECE student Nicholas Bianchi of Ellington High School on becoming a published researcher!

Nicholas recently published an original research article, β€œMind the Gap: Investigating cognitive dissonance and self-esteem correlations in academia,” in the Journal of High School Science.

And there's a great UConn ECE connection: Nicholas conducted his research with students enrolled in UConn Early College Experience Statistics courses, investigating how the difference between the grades students expect and the grades they receive may relate to changes in their academic self-esteem.

The project took Nicholas well beyond simply learning statistics. He designed a research study, collected data, applied statistical analyses, interpreted his findings, considered the limitations of his work, and ultimately took the research through the publication process.

According to Nicholas: For this project, my UConn Stats class though UConn ECE ended up influencing the study in a much deeper way than simply providing a sample or giving me the statistical techniques I needed (which, if you knew how many challenges I overcame to produce a successful study, were certainly vital). It also gave me access to a teacher who helped me navigate the more advanced statistical methods and assumptions that my study demanded. Getting to apply statistics in a real research setting was incredibly rewarding, and the experience made me even more excited to continue pursuing research when I arrive at UConn in the fall.

It's an outstanding example of where a UConn ECE course can take a curious studentβ€”and what can happen when students use what they're learning in a college course to ask and investigate questions of their own.

Congratulations, Nicholas!
