The Ellington Board of Finance held a Special Meeting on Thursday evening to consider reductions to the proposed FY 2026–2027 budget. The Board identified expenditure reductions totaling $522,664. These reductions also resulted in a decrease in associated revenues of $2,149, for a net budget reduction of $520,515. Based on these changes, the estimated mill rate is 25.42. The next budget referendum will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Ellington Senior Center.

First Selectman Laurie Burstein and Town Administrator Matthew Reed are pleased to announce that Mary Bartley has been promoted to Director of Recreation for the Town of Ellington.

Mary has been a valued member of Ellington’s Recreation Department since 1992, bringing more than three decades of dedicated service to the community. Throughout her time here, she has served as Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Supervisor, Waterfront Director, and Assistant Director. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education as well as a Master of Science in Health Education.

Her extensive experience, institutional knowledge, and longstanding commitment to the Town make her exceptionally well-suited for this leadership role.

"I’m delighted to have Mary as our Director of Recreation,” said First Selectman Burstein. “We are incredibly fortunate as a town to have her extensive experience, passion, and commitment to serving our community. ”

“As Recreation Director, my goal is to create inclusive, engaging, and accessible programs that strengthen community connections, promote healthy lifestyles, and enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages,” Mary shared. “Recreation is more than activities; it is about building a vibrant community where everyone feels welcome and involved.”

Former Ellington First Selectwoman Lori Spielman received the Capitol Region Council of Government’s “Beacon of the Region” award at CRCOG’s annual meeting Wednesday. The award recognized her decade as First Selectman and her service to the capitol region during her tenure. Lori was joined by current Ellington First Selectman Laurie Burstein and Town Administrator Matt Reed at the event which was held at the UConn Alumni Center. The Ellington Board of Finance held a Special Meeting on Thursday evening to contemplate reductions to the proposed 2027 budget. The Board was able to identify spending reductions and revenue increases resulting in a net change of $1.5 million. The expected mill rate associated with this change is 25.6. The next referendum will take place on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with voting from 6 am to 8 pm at the Ellington Senior Center.
