This week is National Police Week and Police Officer Memorial Day is Friday, May 15th. Twenty six years ago, I visited the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial for a candelight vigil and reading of the names of the officers who paid the ultimte sacrifice. It was truly a humbling experience. Each of the entrances to the memorial pathways are adorned wtih bronze lions or lionesses overwatching a pride of cubs. Even more moving were the stories of sacrifice of the officers listed on the wall of rememberance. In total, since 1776, there have been 27,358 officers killed on duty. 894 of those were in Georgia. There have been 38 line of duty deaths this year - two of which were in Georgia. It is our hope and prayer that we will remember these officers, as well as their families, during this time. Behind the badge is a person; a son or daughter, brother or sister, mother or father, a member of a family. It is not only the officers sacrifice, but their families as well. We pray to our Creator that our officers be given the strength, wisdom, courage, and integrity needed to serve our communities in a manner worthy of the sacrifices of so many.
