This solstice marks the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt (about 23.5 degrees) toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. (By longest “day,” we mean the longest period of sunlight hours.) On the day of the June solstice, the Northern Hemisphere receives sunlight at the most direct angle of the year.

WEATHER ALERT: US National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington has issued a HEAT ADVISORY for Howard County, in effect until 8:00 p.m. this evening, June 12th. Heat index (the temperature the body feels when heat and humidity are combined) values of around 105 degrees expected. If you are in need of a place to cool off during this time, please stop by one of Howard County Recreation and Parks' community centers (www.howardcountymd.gov/facilities), a Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services 50+ center (www.howardcountymd.gov/50pluscenters), or a Howard County Library System branch (https://hclibrary.org/locations/). Additionally, anyone in need of shelter or other assistance should call the Grassroots Crisis Intervention's hotline at 410-531-6677.

If you must be outside today, please take extra precautions as hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses – heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, to occur. To learn more about the symptoms and what to do if you suspect someone is suffering from one of these heat-related illnesses, visit the CDC's "About Heat and Your Health" webpage at www.cdc.gov/extreme-heat/signs-symptoms/index.html. For tips on how and precautions to take to stay safe during an extreme heat event, visit www.ready.gov/heat.

💧 Voluntary Water Limits Now In Place! With low rainfall continuing, our shared water system is feeling the strain.

Liberty and Prettyboy Reservoirs—key drinking water sources for our region—are currently below normal levels due to ongoing moderate to severe drought conditions.

We’re asking residents to help by voluntarily limiting non-essential water use in:
• Baltimore City
• Baltimore County
• Harford County
• Howard County
• Carroll County

Simple actions at home can make a real difference. Let’s work together to protect our water supply—every drop counts 💙 For more info, please click the link below:
