Dominic was such a gentleman. We will miss you and will always remember our fellow member.
Dear friends,
The children of Dominic Averza sorrowfully announce that our beloved father died peacefully in his sleep at the home he loved on December 11, 2021. He was 94.
Dominic was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather; a successful businessman; and a respected leader in Baltimore’s Italian-American community. He was very proud that his professional accomplishments and charitable work contributed to the vitality of the City of Baltimore, where he was born in 1927 to immigrants from Calabria, Italy.
As President of the local, family-owned contracting company, Joseph Averza & Sons, Dominic oversaw construction projects that redeveloped the City of Baltimore during its legendary renaissance, from major roads and bridges, to cobblestone streets and Charles Center Plaza, to playgrounds, pedestrian malls, and public memorials.
He and our mother, Helen, treasured their many friends in the Italian-American community and were devoted to its causes. He served in various leadership roles over many decades, and he was honored to be the first president and treasurer of the Italian-American Organizations United, which created the City’s Columbus Piazza dedicated by President Ronald Reagan during ceremonies in 1984.
For his tireless dedication to the community, Dominic received numerous honors, including the Dr. Frank C. Marino Award from the Associated Italian American Charities and the Ameritan Award from the Sons of Italy, Grand Lodge of Maryland.
Funeral services will be private. A celebration of Dominic’s life is planned for spring 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dominic’s name to any of the following organizations: the Associated Italian American Charities, the Appian Society, and the Sons of Italy Towson-Dulaney Lodge.
With warm regards,
Vicki Aversa
