Seven Oaks was launched by a group of community members who aim to bring a classical school to the educational options available in the diverse communities surrounding Monroe County. Seven Oaks provides students the benefit of a content rich and academically rigorous clas

sical liberal arts education with a strong civics component. At Seven Oaks, students are challenged to excel both in academics and in moral discipline. Students learn reading, math, and science through time proven methods and learn a true account of history based in the reading of primary source documents. Furthermore, discipline, ethics, and personal responsibility are modeled and expected. Seven Oaks' aim is to develop the academic potential and personal character of each of its students, regardless of background, socio-economic status and ability, and to graduate them fully prepared to become intelligent, responsible, and active members of their community. “Some distractions in the classroom are unfortunate, but these types are golden.” —Mr. Richardson

One of the things I love most about teaching at Seven Oaks is the occasional visit from nature.

Last week, my sixth graders spotted a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk lounging outside. Then, just a few days later, I stepped out of the classroom to pick up some papers. When I returned, the entire class was gathered at the windows.

“What is it?” I asked.

“A fox!” several scholars cried.

Sure enough, just as I looked, I caught a glimpse of a fox slipping into the nearby woods.

It’s not every day that we can take a meaningful break from class like this, but these moments are well worth the few minutes they take. There’s something wonderful about watching a class crowd around a window, smiling and marveling together at something a little out of the ordinary.

Sometimes, wonder is worth the interruption.

Sports Summary Saturday | Firehawks on the Move!

It was another strong week for Firehawk Athletics!

Boys Varsity Soccer earned a big 5–1 road victory over Eastern Greene on Tuesday, keeping their undefeated season going. The Firehawks are now 3–0–1!

Middle School Volleyball also picked up a win Tuesday, defeating Eminence Junior High in two sets.

On Thursday, Girls Varsity Volleyball battled through five sets to defeat Martinsville Tabernacle, bringing their season record to an impressive 3–1! Our Middle School team also competed against Martinsville Tabernacle, falling in two sets.

And the week isn’t over yet! Today, our Cross Country teams head to the Terre Haute North State Preview to compete.

Congratulations to all of our Firehawk athletes and coaches on another week of hard work and competition.

Sometimes, the best classroom doesn’t have walls.

Our Kindergarten students recently took their first nature walk of the year, exploring the Seven Oaks grounds with their teachers and discovering the plants, insects, animals, and little surprises found along the way.

For our youngest students, a walk outside becomes an opportunity to slow down, look closely, ask questions, and wonder.

Because learning to notice the beauty and mystery of the world around them is an education all its own.

Sometimes, the most important moments happen before the school day even begins.

Each morning, our Upper School students gather in the Refectory during drop-off. And each morning, you’ll find teachers doing more than simply overseeing the room.

They’re sitting with students. Asking questions. Sharing stories. Laughing together. Listening. Being present.

These small, everyday conversations may never appear on a lesson plan, but they matter. They build trust, strengthen relationships, and create something every student needs: a sense of belonging.

Belonging grows when students know they are seen, known, and valued, not just for what they accomplish in the classroom, but for who they are. And often, it is built in ordinary moments just like these.

At Seven Oaks, education has always been about more than what happens during class.

It’s about people, and being intentional with the moments we’re given.

Some of the most important work at Seven Oaks happens behind the scenes.

Before students arrive, after they leave, and throughout the busy school day, our Facilities Team is hard at work caring for the place we all share.

They fix what breaks, clean what gets messy, prepare spaces for the next event, solve problems most of us never even know happened, and tackle the countless little things it takes to keep a K–12 school running each day.

Their work may not always happen in the spotlight, but its impact is everywhere.

Today, we want to introduce—and thank—the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make Seven Oaks a welcoming place for our students, teachers, and families.

We are grateful for our Facilities Team and the pride and care they put into our school every single day.

When a real-life “giant” walks by your classroom… you invite him in for story time!

During dismissal one afternoon, Ms. Pursell’s students spotted high school student Zion, walking by on his way to soccer practice. At 6'5", Zion immediately caught their attention.

“WOW! Look at him—he’s a giant!”

Ms. Pursell couldn’t let an opportunity like that pass by. So, she invited Zion to visit the class and read Jack and the Beanstalk.

A real-life “giant” reading a story about giants? It doesn’t get much better than that.

It was a simple, joyful moment, but also one of those uniquely Seven Oaks moments we love: younger students looking up to the big kids (quite literally!), and older students taking the time to make their day a little more special.
