UPDATE AS OF MONDAY 1/26/26 3:00 PM: Supervisor Stoeckeler has lifted the State of Emergency. Please exercise caution when traveling as roads may remain slick.

STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED:

Beginning 6 PM Saturday, January 24th through 6 PM Wednesday, January 28th.

Due to the anticipated impacts of Winter Storm Fern, a State of Emergency is being declared to protect public health and safety.

Please exercise caution, avoid travel, and keep streets clear of cars and waste bins to ensure timely removal of snow and ability to maintain essential and emergency services.

Residents who do not have access to safe shelter during this time, please utilize the warming center located at the Hunt Memorial building in Ellenville.

The Ulster County Warming Center in Ellenville will officially open Saturday, Jan. 24 at 5 PM! The warming center is being activated in partnership with the Village of Ellenville and the Town of Wawarsing, and will be operated by 2nda Iglesia La Misión Church, which also operates the Kingston Warming Center. The Center is located at the Hunt Memorial Building at 124 Canal St, Ellenville and will be open every day from 5 PM - 9 AM through the end of March.

ATTENTION WAWARSING RESIDENTS:

HIGH FIRE-DANGER RISK OUTDOOR BURN BAN throughout the State of New York, until October 15, 2025.

This burn ban prohibits the starting of outdoor fires statewide for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, recreational fires and open fires used for cooking, unless otherwise excluded below. This ban shall not apply to:

(a) Barbecue grills, maple sugar arches and similar outdoor cooking devices when used for cooking or processing food.

(b) Contained campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter if contained in a fireplace, hibachi or fire ring.

(c) On-site burning of agricultural wastes as part of a valid agricultural operation on contiguous agricultural lands larger than five acres actively devoted to agricultural or horticultural use, provided such waste is grown or generated on those lands and such waste is capable of being fully burned within a 24-hour period.

(d) Burning on an emergency basis of explosive or other dangerous or contraband materials by police or other public safety organizations.

( e) Prescribed burns performed according to 6 NYC RR Part 194.

(f) Fire training, including firefighting, fire rescue, and fire/arson investigation training, performed under applicable rules and guidelines of the New York State Department of State's Office of Fire Prevention and Control. For fire training performed on acquired structures, the structures must be emptied and stripped of any material that is toxic, hazardous or likely to emit toxic smoke (such as asbestos, asphalt shingles and vinyl siding or other vinyl products) prior to burning and must be at least 300 feet from other occupied structures. No more than one structure per lot or within a 300 foot radius (whichever is bigger) may be burned in a training exercise.

(g) Individual open fires as approved by the director of the Division of Air Resources as may be required in response to an outbreak of a plant or animal disease upon request by_ the commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets, or for the destruction of invasive plant and insect species.

You’re Invited: Town of Wawarsing Highway Garage Ribbon Cutting & Open House

The Town of Wawarsing invites residents to join us for a Ribbon Cutting and Open House of the new Highway Garage on Saturday, April 12, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

This is an opportunity to see the new facility firsthand, learn more about its function and purpose, and speak with town officials and highway department staff. The new garage is a significant piece of infrastructure intended to serve our community for decades to come.

Whether you’re curious about the building itself or want to better understand the work of our Highway Department, we encourage you to stop by, take a tour, and ask questions.
