What can be revealed when you put on a mask? In their Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition “Pierrot”, Bri Dumenigo explores what they can reveal about themselves while disguised as their clown persona “Monty”. Through photography, this persona becomes a full character themselves. Exploring topics such as isolation, LGBTQIA+ inequalities, and self-expression.
Being in front of the camera is vulnerable but the character Monty allowed me to be more expressive behind the facade of makeup and stage.” Dumenigo explains. “I was comfortable enough to express how I was feeling through Monty.”
Dumenigo grew up fascinated by both cosplay and clowns, bringing these two loves together when they started photography in college. Hidden beneath a colorful, eye-catching disguise, inner sadness and anger shine through within the posing of Monty, pushing the clown aesthetic with props like balloon dogs. Using a digital camera and bright color gel lights they are able to capture these images.
