Seedlings + SNAP = Grow Your Own Food

Did you know you can use SNAP benefits to buy seeds and seedlings?

That means you can grow your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs right at home.

A small start can turn into a season of fresh food!

If you haven't applied for benefits or you applied in the past but have had a change in circumstance (loss of job or hours, added a household member, childcare expenses, medical expenses) it's worth it to check in with our SNAP Coordinator Alondra to find out if you qualify! Email [email protected]

Yesterday, we received a generous donation of tomato starts from an anonymous supporter, and all of the plants have found new homes! We’re so grateful for our community’s kindness in helping our clients grow their own food and supporting FARM4FISH, our homegrown produce program. Do you have any extra plant starts in your greenhouse? We would be happy to take them and distribute them to our clients.

Have any questions about FARM4FISH? Contact Grace at [email protected] or call (509) 925 5990 ext. 1002.

Each year, we invite local gardeners to grow fresh produce for FARM4FISH, our homegrown donation program. To support this effort, we’re highlighting the Bookworms to Earthworms Seed Share, the free seed library at the Ellensburg Public Library. This resource helps reduce financial barriers by providing seeds to anyone who wants to grow their own food or contribute fresh produce to FISH. If you have any extra seeds laying around, consider bringing them to the seed library and sharing the abundance. Fresh garden donations can be brought to 804 Elmview Road, Ellensburg. What are you planting in your garden?

For participating seniors, CSFP offers more than just food and nourishment. It also helps combat the poor health conditions often found in seniors who experience food insecurity. CSFP food packages are specifically designed to supplement nutrients typically lacking in participants’ diets. These healthy foods help seniors avoid costly hospitalizations and nursing home placements.

Free Monthly Food Boxes for Seniors

Seniors age 60+ with an income below $23,475 (single) or $31,725 (two-person household) may qualify for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).

FISH provides eligible seniors in Kittitas County with a free box of nutritious food every month. Boxes are delivered to partner pantries across the county, including Easton, and are also available through Mobile Pantry distributions in Roslyn and Kittitas.

Each box includes a variety of healthy foods such as canned fruits and vegetables, juice, dairy, potatoes, cereal, rice, and protein.

This program is a great way to stretch your budget while ensuring regular access to nutritious food — at no cost to you.
