With the freezing temperatures approaching, The City of Ellaville Water Dept. wants to make sure you know how to protect your pipes in freezing weather.

Listed below are some tips for protecting those pipes.

💧Make sure exterior faucets are protected with a foam insulating cover.
💧Disconnect outside water hoses.
💧Make sure foundation vents and crawl space access doors are CLOSED to keep frigid air from infiltrating the crawl space.
💧If you have inside faucets on exterior walls, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate.
💧Leave water dripping slightly from interior faucets to keep water moving through your pipes.
💧Know where your main water line cutoff valve is located.
💧Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.

ELLAVILLE, GA — Nestled in the heart of Schley County, the city of Ellaville remains a quintessential example of South Georgia’s enduring spirit. As the county seat, this small but vibrant community serves as a living monument to the region’s deep agricultural roots and its ability to adapt through over 160 years of American history.

The story of Ellaville is inextricably linked to the creation of Schley County in 1857. Named after Governor William Schley, the county required a central hub for governance. In 1858, a site was chosen on the high ground between the Flint and Chattahoochee river basins.

The town was named Ellaville in honor of Ella Burton, the daughter of Robert Burton, who sold the initial 150 acres of land to the county for the town's development. By the time it was officially incorporated in 1859, Ellaville was already positioned as a vital stop for trade and local politics.

While cotton was the original king of the local economy, Ellaville’s history is marked by diversification. Following the Civil War, the arrival of the Buena Vista and Ellaville Railroad in the 1880s transformed the town into a bustling shipping point. This connection to the wider world allowed local farmers to export timber, peaches, and later, poultry and peanuts.

One of the town’s most significant historical landmarks is the Schley County Courthouse. Built in 1899, the Romanesque Revival structure stands as a testament to the town's prosperity at the turn of the 20th century and remains one of the most photographed historic buildings in the region.

Today, Ellaville balances its historical identity with modern community life. With a population that has remained steady at around 1,500 residents, the town prides itself on a "slow-paced" quality of life that has become increasingly rare.

The downtown district, characterized by its brick storefronts and the iconic water tower, continues to host local businesses that have served families for generations. Annual events and the preservation of historic homes along the main thoroughfares ensure that while the world around it changes, the heritage of Ella Burton’s namesake remains intact.
