The water leak has been found thanks to a concerned citizen reporting it. Lightning struck the line or ran in on from a nearby tree.
While the repair is in progress a section of the line will be isolated with no pressure. The isolated area is on Hwy 240E between US19 and Blan Wall Road. Customers in the area of Blan Wall, Coogle Road, and Hwy 240E will be without service for several hours while the repairs are being made.

The Schley County water system has a major leak most likely caused by a lightning strike. If you see evidence of the leak please call the County office at 229-937-2609 or 937-5848.

BURN BAN ORDERED BY GA FORESTRY
Due to the exceptional drought conditions (that continue to worsen), a burn ban is in effect for 91 counties (including Schley) until May 22, 2026.

There are presently an unusually large number of active wildfires in the state, many of which started from outdoor burns. A temporary burn ban is necessary to preserve life and property due to unusually hazardous conditions.

FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (KEY MESSAGES):
Update as of 12:15 PM Mar 15, 2026
Increasing confidence in widespread severe weather from this evening through Monday morning for all of North and Central Georgia. However, exact timing/duration still remains highly uncertain.

The main line of strong to severe thunderstorms associated with a strong cold front will move from west to east across the area beginning Sunday Night and lasting until it pushes east of the area by Monday afternoon.
At least a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 3) for severe weather covers all of North and Central Georgia for this time period.
Widespread sub-freezing temperatures will follow the strong cold front which is likely to pose a significant threat to spring crops and vegetation.

WHAT:
Severe Potential: Damaging winds (up to 60 mph) and a tornado are possible in the vicinity of the warm front this afternoon.
Damaging winds (up to 70 mph or more) and a few tornadoes are the main threat associated with the line and for any stronger cells forming out ahead of the line.
Sub-freezing Temperatures: Widespread lows in the 20s to low 30s are forecast.
Wind chills in the teens to low 20s are forecast areawide.
WHERE & WHEN:
Severe Potential: There is still quite a bit of uncertainty as far as exact timing/duration of the cold front as it pushes through Central Georgia. There are some indications that it may slow and/or stall near Interstate 85 which would result in the severe weather threat extending into late Monday morning and early Monday afternoon for much of Central Georgia.

North and West Georgia: Sunday Evening through Early Monday Morning
Central Georgia/East-Central Georgia: A lower risk for This Afternoon (Sunday) and then again Monday morning into early afternoon (primary concern).
Sub-freezing Temperatures: Expected both Monday Night/Tuesday Morning AND Tuesday Night/Wednesday Morning

IMPACTS:
-Severe weather, namely damaging winds and tornadoes, are likely to result in downed trees/powerlines or cause some structural damage.
-Numerous power outages are possible.
-Heavy rainfall with any strong/severe storms may pose a threat for localized flooding.
-Sub-freezing Temperatures: will pose a significant threat to spring crops and vegetation.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE:
-MEDIUM to HIGH confidence on occurrence of severe weather.
-MEDIUM confidence in exact timing/duration of severe threat.
-HIGH confidence in widespread sub-freezing temperatures.

National Weather Service: Severe weather potential (late Sunday night through Monday): A strong cold front likely accompanied by a line of strong to potentially severe storms will move across all of North and Central Georgia late Sunday night through Monday afternoon.
Exact timing remains uncertain, but confidence is starting to increase in this event bringing some sort of severe weather to the area.
Primary threats: Damaging winds and tornadoes. Small hail and locally heavy rainfall are additional threats.
Widespread sub-freezing temperatures -- Monday Night/Tuesday Morning and Tuesday Night/Wednesday Morning
Widespread (actual air) temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s both nights.
The duration of sub-freezing temperatures each night could be > 6 hours across much of the area. Wind chills are currently forecast to range from the teens (single digits in the mountains) to mid 20s.

HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING

Please help us plan for future disaster response. Get involved with Hazard Mitigation planning. Two meetings will be held at the Community Center: March 16 and April 20 at 6:30 PM.

Georgia's unique geographical location exposes the state and its citizens to severe weather at any time of the year. Georgia is one the few places where regional weather conditions may include snow and ice accumulations accompanied by lighting and tornadoes from the same storm event. Georgia has averaged a federal disaster declaration about once every year for the last fifteen years. How can we protect and prepare ourselves for the next natural disaster in Georgia? One answer is Hazard Mitigation Planning.

A Hazard Mitigation Plan forms the foundation for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction and repeated damage. The planning process is as important as the plan itself. It creates a framework for risk-based decision making to reduce damages to lives, property, and the economy from future disasters. State and local governments are required to develop and maintain a hazard mitigation plan as a condition of receiving certain types of hazard mitigation disaster assistance, emergency and non-emergency.
