Elko County

Elko County Elko County, located in Northeastern Nevada, is the 4th largest land county in the continental U.S. Mountain City was also founded.

With the arrival of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1868, Elko, Carlin and Wells were established. That same year the Idaho Central Wagon Road connected Carlin to the mines in Silver City, Idaho. On March 5, 1869, by act of the Nevada Legislature, Elko County, the 4th largest county in the continental United States, was created. Elko County has led the way in many firsts for the state of Nevada and has produced five Nevada Governors. Strong beliefs and pride in an independent spirit, traditions and guaranteed freedoms keep this county in the fore front of protecting its citizens and natural resources while still working towards a prosperous environment in which to live, work, raise children and retire. Not to mention having some of the most beautiful landscapes in Nevada from the Ruby Mountains to our desert lands.

🔥 OPEN BURNING UPDATE — TENTATIVE REOPENING OCTOBER 3, 2026
With shorter days, cooler temperatures, and increased overnight humidity, Elko County Fire is tentatively planning to reopen open burning beginning Saturday, October 3, 2026.

A valid burn permit is required for open burning. Before burning, please renew or obtain your permit at:
https://elkocountynv.firepermits.com

You must activate your permit each day you burn.

Burning without the required permit, burning when burning is closed, or failing to follow permit requirements may result in fines or other legal penalties. If an illegal or unattended burn escapes, the responsible party may also be held liable for fire suppression costs and damages.

⚠️ Fire season isn’t over yet.

There is still potential for significant fire activity. Elko County Fire will continue monitoring weather and fuel conditions, and burning may be closed on individual days due to wind, low humidity, Red Flag conditions, or other elevated fire danger.
Before you burn, check the burn permit system to make sure burning is allowed that day, have water and tools available, and never leave your fire unattended.
When in doubt, don’t burn.

Scam calls & fraud

Ongoing scam calls/fraud

September 16, 2026

This is a public service announcement regarding ongoing scam calls. One of the scams we have been dealing with for a few years involves people calling and claiming to be law enforcement. The caller will tell you that you have a warrant for your arrest, and the caller will claim you missed court or fail to show for a jury summons. These calls can show up on caller ID as the Sheriff's Office as they are cloning our number. If this is the case, hang up the phone and call the Sheriff's Office to ensure that it is fraud. These people are very convincing and will often have a police radio playing in the background.

The Elko County Sheriff's Office will never call you and ask you to deposit cash in any way to clear up a warrant. If you do have a warrant it needs to be cleared at Elko County Jail or by the courts. Please do not deposit any cash no matter how pushy these people get! Again, we do not clear warrants this way and they are always scamming you if that is the request. If you believe that you are being scammed, simply hang up the phone and call the Sheriff's Office to clear up any misunderstandings.

Please share this message and tell your friends and family not to fall for this scam. Deputies do frequently call the public to address legitimate law enforcement business, and we will leave a message to call us back at the office or on our cell phones. Our office number is 775-738-3421. Our front office staff can assist you with clearing up any confusion by connecting you with the correct deputy or administrator.

There are many other scams where people are asking for money for many different reasons. There are too many to list. Please do not give money to anyone unless you are 100% sure you owe it to them. If they ask to pay in bitcoin, it is a scam!
