ANNOUNCING THE PATSY BURGESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
An anonymous donor has requested that the Elkin Educational Foundation establish a new scholarship in memory of Patsy Burgess (December 12, 1960 — January 13, 2026). This scholarship would honor Patsy’s long and distinguished career at Elkin High School and would celebrate her lifelong commitment to students, education, and the Elkin community. The donor has launched the scholarship with a challenge grant and invites others to join in supporting this meaningful initiative benefiting the school Patsy loved and faithfully served.
Patsy Burgess dedicated 38 years to education at Elkin High School, where she began her career teaching Business Education. Known to generations of students as “Mrs. Burgess,” she was admired for her practical, common-sense teaching style and her ability to prepare students not only for the classroom, but for life beyond it. Former students often reflect that the lessons they learned in her classes continue to guide them in their careers and daily lives.
A National Board Certified Educator, Patsy was also a trusted mentor to fellow teachers throughout her career. Her contributions to education were recognized with the prestigious Long Leaf Pine Award, presented by the Office of the Governor of North Carolina to individuals who demonstrate exemplary service in their field. She retired in 2022, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, mentorship, and student success.
Patsy also played an instrumental role in shaping scholarship opportunities through the Elkin Educational Foundation. In 2020, her insight helped guide the creation of the Blue and Gold Scholarship after she identified a lack of financial support for students pursuing vocational and technical pathways. As a result, the scholarship has been awarded to forty-nine students pursuing careers in the trades and industrial technology, nursing and medical technology, and computer technology.
The Patsy Burgess Memorial Scholarship continues her legacy by investing in students whose paths reflect her belief in practical education, opportunity, and preparation for the future.
