But if you have the time, the whole program has a lot to cheer about, and a lot of cheering. Really, some excellent speeches.
Hearing him talk about how he put the state back on the success track after taking the reins from the prior Governor, Scott Walker, was truly inspiring. His record inspired the delegates to chant enthusiastically “Thank You, Tony.” Sure, the signs were printed ahead of time, but the gratitude was real.
Too often, we hear voters complain that Democrats haven’t done anything. Let’s correct that impression here. And let’s also remember the 200+ obnoxious Republican-passed bills that Gov. Evers vetoed.
Here is just a short list of Gov. Evers accomplishments.
BIPARTISAN EFFORTS: “Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has signed over 800 bills into law, with more than 97% of those bills passing with bipartisan support.” (https://www.google.com/search?q=governor+evers+record+on+bipartisan+action+summary&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari)
ROADS: “repaired nearly 5,000 miles of highways . . . improved nearly 1,500 bridges all over Wisconsin, to keep drivers safe on the road.” This is a big improvement over “the previous administration, when our roads were among the worst in the Midwest.”
EDUCATION: “Today, Wisconsin’s education system is ranked the 8th best in the nation, up from 18th under the previous administration.”
HIGH SPEED INTERNET: He delivered on his promise “to invest in quality, high-speed internet access across the state” investing “almost fifteen times more into expanding high-speed internet than the prior four years combined.”
SMALL BUSINESS: “During his first term, Gov. Evers has invested over $1 billion to support small businesses.” In addition, “Gov. Evers has supported more than 100,000 small businesses, and thanks to his Main Street Bounceback program, more than 4,500 small businesses have opened up new storefronts on main streets across our state.”
AGRICULTURE: Evers “introduced a bold legislative package that builds on our success by creating new local markets, attracting new talent to the meat processing industry, and increases marketing for Wisconsin-made products.
The Evers administration “made critical investments to support mental health programs across Wisconsin, specifically for our farmers.” In addition, Evers’s Office of Rural Prosperity helps Wisconsinites navigate state programs and brings rural leaders together to solve problems specific to rural areas of the state.
HEALTH CARE: Evers worked hard to protect access to health care and would have joined the Medicaid expansion program but for GOP blockage in the legislature. Wisconsin is one of the 12 states where the GOP has blocked Medicaid expansion. Republicans said “No thanks” to improving access to health care, reducing anxiety about getting health care, and improving health outcomes as a result at minimal cost (https://www.cbpp.org/research/health/medicaid-expansion-frequently-asked-questions-0)
