Celebrating Rotary Service and Building a Lead-Free Elkhart

The meeting began with a celebration of service as Rotarians Paul Warning and Stu Barb were recognized with Paul Harris Fellow Plus awards. This honor reflects their continued commitment to the Rotary Foundation and Rotary's mission of Service Above Self. Congratulations to both Paul and Stu, and thank you for your generosity and dedication to improving lives locally and around the world.

Following the recognition, Rotary welcomed Hollie Carlson, Program Manager for the City of Elkhart's Lead Capacity Building Grant, to discuss the ongoing effort to reduce lead exposure and create healthier homes for local families. Through funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Elkhart Lead Free Program is focused on community education, increasing childhood lead testing, and expanding the number of lead-certified contractors available to perform remediation work. Her presentation highlighted the importance of collaboration and prevention in addressing a public health issue that can have lifelong impacts on children and families throughout our community.

Investing in the Organizations That Strengthen Our Community

One of the greatest privileges of Rotary is the opportunity to support the organizations that work tirelessly to improve lives throughout Elkhart County. This year, Elkhart Rotary awarded grants to 18 local nonprofits: ADEC, Lacasa, Inc., LoveWay, Inc., Tolson Center, Hearts United for Bristol, Isaiah 117 House Elkhart County, Church Community Services, Heart City Health, Ryan's Place, A Rosie Place for Children, Real Services, Bashor Children's Home, The Salvation Army - Elkhart, IN, Cancer Resources for Elkhart County, Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County, Five Star Life, Wellfield Botanic Gardens, and Council on Aging of Elkhart County, Inc..

During the meeting, we had the opportunity to hear from many of these organizations about the incredible work they are doing every day. From supporting children and families to addressing housing, healthcare, food insecurity, aging services, and disability support, these nonprofits are making a meaningful difference across our community. Their passion, dedication, and impact served as a powerful reminder of why Rotary is committed to investing in local organizations that help Elkhart County thrive.

BIG NEWS: Elkhart Rotarian Terri Rickel Installed as Rotary District 6540Governor

Rotarians from across northern Indiana gathered at the beautiful Wellfield Botanic Gardens to celebrate the installation of Elkhart Rotary's own Terri Rickel as District Governor of Rotary District 6540. The setting made the evening especially meaningful for Elkhart Rotarians, as our club played a founding role in the creation of Wellfield. Originally conceived by the Rotary Club of Elkhart as a community project to celebrate Rotary International's centennial, Wellfield has grown into one of the region's most treasured destinations.

The timing could not have been more fitting. Just days before the installation, Wellfield Botanic Gardens was recognized as the top-ranked botanical garden in the United States in a national study evaluating more than 400 public gardens. This remarkable achievement highlights the vision, community support, and stewardship that have shaped Wellfield into a destination of national significance.

Terri's installation marks the beginning of a year of service and leadership for District 6540, which includes Rotary clubs throughout northern Indiana. A longtime member of Elkhart Rotary, Terri has dedicated countless hours to serving both Rotary and the broader community through club leadership, district service, and community engagement. Her installation is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for the entire Elkhart Rotary Club.

As we celebrated Terri's leadership, the evening also served as a reminder of Rotary's lasting impact. From helping create a nationally recognized botanical garden to developing leaders who serve communities across the district, Rotary continues to leave a legacy that extends far beyond a single project or year of service. Congratulations, Governor Terri Rickel. We are proud to support you as you lead District 6540 into the year ahead.

Celebrating a Musical Treasure in Elkhart County

Rotary was honored to welcome members of the Elkhart County Symphony, a cherished community institution that has enriched our region with music since 1948. A portion of the symphony's brass section performed live during the meeting, providing a wonderful soundtrack to lunch and showcasing the talent that makes the organization such a cultural asset to our community.

In addition to the performance, we learned more about the symphony's upcoming season and the important role it continues to play in bringing arts, culture, and connection to Elkhart County. It was a pleasure to experience the music firsthand and celebrate one of the true jewels of our community.

We were pleased to welcome two Rotary scholarship recipients currently attending Indiana University. The students shared updates on their academic journeys, experiences on campus, and goals for the future. Their stories served as a reminder that Rotary's commitment to building stronger communities extends beyond today's challenges and into the next generation of leaders. Together, the conversation highlighted the importance of investing in both places and people to create a thriving future for Elkhart.

Our main speaker last week was Scott Krone of CRIB Holding who discussed new approaches to residential development in Elkhart. Scott shared plans for a mixed-use project that combines apartments and storage while creating new opportunities for workforce housing. Through a unique Employee Rent Contribution model developed in partnership with the City of Elkhart, the project aims to help attract and retain the workers who are essential to our community's continued growth and success.

Clear Messages Create Greater Impact

Kate Berkey joined Rotary today to share how organizations can communicate more clearly to better connect with customers, donors, and the community. Drawing from the StoryBrand framework and more than a decade of nonprofit experience, Kate explained how confusing messaging can unintentionally push people away, while simple and compelling communication helps organizations grow their impact.

Rotarians walked away with practical tools to strengthen their marketing, sharpen their message, and better tell the story of the work they do.
