Since then it has served the citizens of the City of Elkhart by presenting environmental education programs to school-age students, offering public programs and workshops on environmental topics, and participating in restoration projects throughout the City of Elkhart. The Elkhart Environmental Center was once the Lusher Avenue Garbage Dump. Through the efforts of the Mayor's Office, The City's Pu
blic Works and Utilities, the University of Notre Dame and Elkhart Community Schools a plan was put in place to convert the dump into an environmental education park. The site was clay capped and restoration began. There is still 30 acres of garbage 15-20 ft. deep under the grounds of the Environmental Center. In 1991 the Martin Foundation, a charitable division of NIBCO, generously donated funds for the construction of a log cabin education center. The EEC is now an 80+ acre greenspace featuring public trails that are open dawn - dusk every day. It also serves as the sustainability department for the City of Elkhart and a resource for citizens. Throughout the year, we host a variety of programs, events, and volunteer opportunities. Regarding Facebook:
The City of Elkhart utilizes its pages to share information and engage with our constituents. We will continue to use all city pages with that goal in mind, however, commenting on future posts will not be allowed. The same practice will be in place for all public meetings moving forward. While meetings will stream on Facebook, all comments and participation will be done via WebEx and a link to the meeting will be provided in the Facebook descriptions of each meeting post. Questions?
