Situated along the banks of the Turkey River in Elkader, Iowa, Riverside Cooperage Mill and Retreat offers guest suites for short-term stays of three days or more, as well as weekly rentals. In June 22,1846 John Thompson,Timothy Davis & Chester Sage are credited with laying out the town. The town of Elkader was organized in 1847. The three in partnership built the mill, a sawmill & first retail st

ore. The Riverside Mill sits on the original 64 acres that was purchased by the founders. This was the largest mill in Clayton county & brought much trade to Elkader. In 1917 some of the mill,property was bought by Elkader Electric Light & Power Company,and a dam was built behind the building to bring electric power to Elkader for the first time. Today we are happy to share this Beautiful & historic limestone building with three large suites for your lodging destination. You will have the most awesome view of the Turkey River & sound of water rushing over the dam. Also you will enjoy the beauty of the keystone bridge.
