Have you witnessed lane splitting and filtering yet? While newly legal in Minnesota, the practice has proven in other states to be a safe and effective option for motorcyclists. So what is it?

Both lane splitting and filtering occur when two or more lanes are traveling in the same direction. However, Lane splitting is when cars are moving, while lane filtering is when cars are NOT moving.

Motorcyclists can lane split at no more than 25 miles per hour or lane filter at no more than 15 miles per hour. Motorcyclists should not use these methods when at a roundabout, in a school zone, in a work zone, or on an on-ramp.

Motorists need to be aware of motorcycles sharing their lane in slow-moving traffic and when stopped at intersections.

Today, we pause to honor the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. Their service and sacrifice remain a powerful reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness that defines this profession. We remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty, and we also reflect on the families they left behind, spouses, children, parents, relatives, and friends whose lives are forever changed by their loss but work tirelessly to carry their memory forward. We hope their colleagues and loved ones find comfort in knowing these men and women are remembered with gratitude, honored as heroes, and will remain in our hearts and minds for generations to come.
