Friends of Stone Lakes NWR Friends of Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Sacramento County supports the Refuge staff in enhancing wildlife habitat and public education.

Blue Heron Trails at the Refuge Headquarters is open dawn to dusk, 7 days a week. Become a 'Friend' of Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, the Refuge has many opportunities to enjoy the natural landscape right outside of Elk Grove, CA. Come walk the Blue Heron trail, a series of accessible paths with educational signage, or bring a kayak to the Refuge's group boating excursions! The Refuge is an important habitat for many migrating bird species, bring your birding binoculars! The Friends of Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the conservation, protection, enhancement and promotion of the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge through its appropriate management and outreach efforts and the provision of appropriate resource-based outdoor educational and recreational opportunities for the visiting public.

Whether it be through classroom field trips, scholarships, or informal visits to the Refuge, there is much to see and learn about our local wildlife and their habitat. On Monday, 12/29/2025, the Refuge and local birding volunteers took part in the annual Christmas Bird Count. 3 teams went to different parts of the Refuge to count the number of birds and what species were at each site. It was a very cold and foggy day, but thanks to expert birders with good eyes and ears, many different species were sited and cataloged. Josh Greenfield, one of the bird banders at the Refuge, got these great pictures of some of the birds we spotted. I contributed the fog picture to show what the conditions were.
