Unfortunately for them, we know better. Use insect repellent, eliminate standing water and take steps to keep mosquitoes outside where they belong.

Don’t give mosquitoes what they want!

West Nile virus activity continues in our region.

West Nile virus is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people who become infected won't develop symptoms, some may experience fever, headache, body aches and other symptoms, and a small number can develop serious illness.

For the first time, invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have been found breeding in homes in the United Kingdom.

The recent discovery in east London is a new development for the UK and highlights how invasive mosquito species can spread and establish themselves in new areas.

Here at home, Aedes aegypti are already established in parts of Sacramento and Yolo counties. Their continued spread is why surveillance, mosquito control and eliminating small sources of standing water are so important.

Got horses? 🐓 Don’t forget about West Nile virus prevention.

Horses are vulnerable to West Nile virus, but vaccination can help protect them. Talk with your veterinarian about keeping vaccinations up to date, and reduce standing water around barns, troughs and other areas where mosquitoes can breed.

An invasive mosquito is creating new challenges for malaria control in Africa.

Anopheles stephensi thrives in urban areas and can breed in small, man-made containers that hold water, allowing it to spread in places where malaria has historically been less common.

Its spread is another example of why invasive mosquitoes are such an important public health concern and why mosquito surveillance and control matter.

Mosquito bites in the middle of the day? It could be an invasive Aedes mosquito.

Unlike many mosquitoes that are most active around dawn and dusk, invasive Aedes mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters. That means mosquito protection is important during daytime activities too.

If you're spending time outside, use an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and be sure to follow the label directions.

Invasive Aedes mosquitoes are difficult to control once established, so protecting yourself from bites is an important part of living with these mosquitoes in our area.
